Yamaha R2 Expected To Launch In India During 2026 Festive Season

Yamaha is anticipated to launch the R2 in India by late 2026. The new motorcycle will be sold alongside the brand's popular R15 sports bike. Positioned between the R15 and the R3, the R2 is expected to feature a more powerful 200cc single-cylinder engine, marking Yamaha's first offering in this segment.

Yamaha R2 Details

The Yamaha R15 is one of the most iconic models sold by the Japanese manufacturer in India. It enjoys a cult following in the country and is one of the brand's top-selling motorcycles. Only the RX 100 had a similar impact in the Indian market apart from the R15. Now Yamaha is planning to launch an upgraded and powerful version of the bike with the launch of the R2 this year.

Introducing a 200cc motorcycle makes sense, as the 200cc category has now become the new entry-level sports bike segment in the Indian market. The R2 bike will not replace the R15 but will be sold alongside in the YZF lineup. It is likely to feature a more powerful 200cc engine (a first from Yamaha in this segment) and will be completely manufactured in India.

Recently, Yamaha patented the R2 in India, and it is expected to feature a 200cc liquid-cooled SOHC VVA engine. The motorcycle will share several design and feature elements with the R15. Power output is expected to be around 23 bhp and 19 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed gearbox and an assist and slipper clutch.

The engine will be tuned for both performance and fuel efficiency. The R15 is well appreciated for its strong highway performance and good fuel efficiency in city conditions. The Yamaha R2 is expected to arrive by late 2026, around the festive season. The motorcycle is also set to be exported to global markets, including Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Once launched, it will compete with motorcycles such as the KTM RC 200, Bajaj Pulsar RS 200, and the Hero Karizma XMR 210. The Japanese bike maker recently launched its highly anticipated neo-retro motorcycle, the XSR 155, which utilizes the same engine as the R15.
