Yamaha R2 Could Arrive As A New Global 200cc Super Sport Motorcycle

Yamaha Motor Company is reportedly preparing to introduce the all-new Yamaha YZF-R2 globally by the end of this year. The upcoming motorcycle is expected to be positioned between the Yamaha YZF-R15 and the Yamaha YZF-R3 in Yamaha's global supersport lineup.

Yamaha R2 Could be a Global Product

The Japanese brand is reportedly planning to position the R2 motorcycle as a global product for multiple international markets including India, the USA, Europe, Mexico and Australia. The recently filed trademarks related to the R2 name in several countries, which strongly suggests that the motorcycle is being developed as a global product.

The upcoming Yamaha YZF-R2 is expected to fill the gap between the entry-level R15 and the twin-cylinder R3. While the R15 focuses on lightweight handling and efficiency, and the R3 targets premium twin-cylinder performance enthusiasts, the R2 could emerge as a more balanced middle-ground supersport motorcycle.

Could Be Sold Alongside the R15

Currently, the Yamaha YZF-R15 is one of the most successful sport motorcycles in the Indian market. It is powered by a 155cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine featuring Yamaha's VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) technology, which is widely appreciated for balancing performance, refinement, and fuel efficiency. We also believe the R15 wont be discontinued after the R2 launch.

Expected features

Reports suggest that Yamaha could increase the engine displacement to around 200cc for the new Yamaha YZF-R2. The 200cc category has now become one of the most important entry-level performance motorcycle segments globally, especially among younger riders upgrading from commuter motorcycles.

The R2 is expected to continue using Yamaha's lightweight Deltabox frame architecture combined with VVA technology. This combination could help the motorcycle deliver sporty high-speed performance while maintaining good city rideability and fuel efficiency.

Performance figures are expected to be around 20 to 25 PS of power and approximately 18 to 20 Nm of torque paired with a 6-speed gearbox. Yamaha may also equip the motorcycle with an assist and slipper clutch as standard, which helps reduce rear-wheel hopping during aggressive downshifts and improves overall riding confidence.

Yamaha R2

The Yamaha YZF-R2 could also borrow premium features from the larger R3, including a more advanced instrument cluster and a sportier cockpit layout to improve its premium appeal. For many Yamaha enthusiasts, the R2 could become the perfect upgrade from the R15 by offering higher performance without moving into the more expensive twin-cylinder segment.

The motorcycle is expected to arrive in India shortly after its global debut. If launched, the expected pricing could range between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.20 lakh (ex-showroom), making it a strong rival in the growing entry-level sportbike segment.
