Yamaha Working On Airbag System For Scooters – Launch In 2026
Japanese automaker Yamaha is set to develop a new airbag system for its Tricity 300 scooter in collaboration with Autoliv. This system is designed to protect riders in the event of frontal collisions. The airbag system will make its debut this year.
Yamaha Developing Airbag system for scooters
Typically, airbag systems are designed to protect passengers and are used in four-wheelers. Only a few two-wheelers, such as the Honda Gold Wing, are equipped with airbags. Now, Yamaha has partnered with Autoliv to develop a similar safety technology for scooters.

Autoliv has previously worked on a similar safety solution with the Piaggio Group, although it has not yet reached the production stage. Now, with Yamaha, it aims to introduce a front airbag system specifically designed to enhance rider safety on the Tricity 300.
Mikael Bratt, President of Autoliv, said, "This collaboration represents a key development beyond our core business. It contributes to our future growth, and it is an important step in delivering on our long-term strategic agenda. It also marks a significant advancement in safeguarding motorcyclists, who traditionally have far less protection than occupants in light vehicles."

The airbag system is seamlessly integrated into the front panel and is engineered to absorb kinetic energy during a frontal impact. It has been designed to maintain balance and preserve storage space even during deployment.
The system has already undergone validation in line with applicable development standards, including advanced simulations and full-scale crash testing. The updated Tricity 300 scooter is expected to be available in the first half of 2026.
Since the scooter is positioned as a mass-market model, it could be introduced in the Indian market. Yamaha is already a leader in hybrid technology for two-wheelers in India and could become the first brand to introduce airbags in scooters in the country.
