KTM 390 SMC R Spotted Testing - Time For A Super Enduro Revolution?

The KTM 390 SMC R has been spotted testing on Indian roads. A prototype of the KTM 390 SMC R was seen riding on public roads, marking the second appearanceof the bike on our roads.

The recent capture of the 390 SMC R on our roads does show that KTM is evaluating the motorcycle for the Indian market. The supermoto-style bike features a distinct stance with 17-inch wheels and road-focused tyres indicative of its intended setup.

The test mule also shows tall seat height, slim body panels, and a flat section behind the rider, underscoring the aggressive geometry expected on a supermoto platform. These design cues differ from KTM's 390 Enduro R dual-sport model, highlighting the SMC R's road-biased intent as evident from the latest images.

At its core, the motorcycle is expected to share the platform with the 390 Enduro R, which includes a lightweight steel trellis frame, a long-travel WP suspension setup, and a robust braking system engineered for dynamic handling across varied surfaces under real-world conditions.

International variants of the KTM 390 SMC R currently use a 399cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine sourced from the 390 family that produces near 44bhp and 39Nm of torque in global specification, along with ride-friendly electronics and chassis balance designed for spirited riding.

For India, previous reports indicate that KTM is considering a new 350cc version of the motor to avoid the higher tax slab applied to motorcycles above 350cc under the GST 2.0 regime, which charges a steeper duty on these larger capacity bikes which account for a very low percentage of the Indian bike market.

The revised engine is expected to retain much of the existing unit's performance character, with output figures likely in the region of about 40bhp while also complying with the latest emission norms.

Feature expectations for the 390 SMC R include switchable ABS with a supermoto mode, traction control, multiple ride modes, and a full-colour TFT display with smartphone connectivity, bringing the motorcycle on par with KTM's premium 390 lineup in terms of technology and rider interface.

Introducing the 390 SMC R in India would extend KTM's portfolio into the under-represented supermoto segment, which remains largely unexplored in the country compared to established categories such as street, adventure, and dual-sport bikes that dominate current consumer interest.

KTM has not confirmed an official launch timeline for the SMC R in India, but repeated sightings of test prototypes suggest ongoing development and active evaluation of the bike's suitability for the Indian marketplace, with an announcement possible later this year.
