US–India Trade Deal Could Make Harley Davidson Bikes Cheaper — Is Royal Enfield At Risk?

American motorcycle brand Harley-Davidson is expected to become more accessible to Indian customers as the new US-India trade agreement removes import duties on certain models. But does this trade deal put the dominant Royal Enfield under threat? Let us take a closer look.

The US Government has agreed to a trade deal with India, which reduces the import duties of several goods from the US. Harley-Davidson, being an American brand, could also become duty-free and more affordable to Indian buyers.

Harley-Davidson is one of the world's most iconic motorcycle brands and has played a major role in shaping global biking culture. Some of their models, including the Fat Boy, Road King, Street Glide, Sportster, and Softail, are popular worldwide. However, in India, the brand struggled to establish a strong foothold due to the overwhelming popularity of Royal Enfield motorcycles.

The Eicher Group-owned Royal Enfield is deeply connected to Indian consumers and its motorcycling history. They continue to dominate the retro-classic segment, competing with players like Honda, Jawa, Yezdi, BSA, and Triumph. Indian consumers continue to show strong trust in Royal Enfield motorcycles, despite competitors offering higher technology, performance, and refinement. Their market share in 2025 stood at over 95% in both the 250cc-350cc and 500cc-800cc motorcycle segments.

While Harley-Davidson motorcycles are highly popular in the US and other global markets, their premium pricing limited their appeal in India. After years of limited success, the company partnered with Hero MotoCorp to develop the X440, which has delivered strong results for the brand. However, Harley-Davidson's core strength lies in the 800-1600cc motorcycle segment.

These large-capacity premium cruisers are admired for their design, performance, and brand legacy. Harley-Davidson also faces intense competition from established global players, including Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, and Triumph, in this category. With the new US-India trade agreement expected to reduce costs through duty-free imports, Harley-Davidson's larger motorcycles could become relatively more accessible for Indian consumers.

Is Royal Enfield At Risk?

Despite these developments, most Indian buyers still prefer buying 350cc-500cc models due to affordability, easier buying options, and lower maintenance costs compared to premium large-capacity models. Therefore, the US-India trade agreement is unlikely to impact Royal Enfield's dominance and overall sales performance.

Additionally, Harley-Davidson motorcycles primarily attract premium buyers, whereas Royal Enfield models remain more accessible, especially to younger riders. This pricing advantage continues to sustain Royal Enfield's strong sales momentum both in India and international markets.

Our Thoughts

We consider the trade agreement to be a positive outcome for motorcycle enthusiasts, as it may allow an iconic brand like Harley-Davidson to strengthen its presence in India's premium motorcycle segment. Over time, we may also see many Harley-Davidson motorcycles on Indian roads, adding greater variety and competition to the country's evolving premium bike market.
