Ferrari 296 GT Modificata Revealed As Track-Only Special

Ferrari has revealed the 296 GT Modificata, a track-only special derived from the 296 GT3 Evo race car. The company positions it as the most extreme version of the 296 range, built without the FIA and IMSA GT3 regulations that govern the racing model.

The formula mirrors the 488 GT Modificata and 499P Modificata that came before it. Ferrari will build the 296 GT Modificata in extremely limited numbers for members of its Club Competizioni GT track programme, which includes two years, or 12 rounds, of participation in the customer racing series.

Ferrari 296 GT Modificata: Engine & Performance

The 296 GT Modificata carries over the GT3 Evo's 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, minus the plug-in hybrid system fitted to the road-going 296 GTB. Ferrari has fitted new connecting rods and camshafts, and revised the air intake, intercoolers, turbochargers and exhaust.

These changes push the redline from 8,000rpm to 8,500rpm. Output rises to 730hp and 800Nm, a gain of 130hp over the 296 GT3 Evo. Power reaches the rear wheels through a 6-speed sequential gearbox with revised ratios.

Braking hardware gets new front discs and extra cooling to withstand harder use over long track sessions. Ferrari says the 296 GT Modificata laps its Fiorano test track in 1 minute 11 seconds, three seconds quicker than the 296 GT3 Evo.

Bodywork changes include a new front splitter, a redesigned engine cover, more heavily sculpted surfaces and a fixed rear wing. Larger front intakes feed the engine's higher cooling demands, and 'Modificata' lettering is painted into the grille.

Details carried over from the GT3 Evo include driving lights, bumper canards, bonnet latches and front fender air ducts. The car rides on 18-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tyres, while the rear wing adds a new centre pylon, a 5mm Gurney flap and revised endplates.

The exhaust tips are redesigned for the 296 GT Modificata, though the large rear diffuser is largely unchanged from the GT3 Evo's unit. Inside, the cabin is built for track use, with racing bucket seats, harnesses, a pared-back dashboard and a motorsport-derived steering wheel.

Unlike the single-seat GT3 Evo, the 296 GT Modificata retains a two-seat layout so owners can bring a passenger or driving coach along, and Ferrari has fitted an intercom system for the two occupants to communicate.
