E20 Petrol with 95 Octane Now Mandatory In India – What It Means for Your Car & Bike!
The Indian Government has mandated E20 petrol, which is fuel blended with 20% ethanol, with a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95 as the standard. This directive has been issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and will now be implemented nationwide.
E20 Petrol With 95 RON Becomes Mandatory
Most modern vehicles in India are compatible with E20 fuel. Blending petrol with ethanol aims to reduce dependence on crude oil imports, as a significant portion of ethanol is produced domestically. Under the new mandate, all fuel sold in India must contain a 20% ethanol blend and meet a minimum 95 octane rating, ensuring better performance and engine health.
Higher-quality fuel helps prevent engine knocking, which occurs due to uneven combustion and can reduce engine life over time. By maintaining fuel standards, consumers are expected to benefit from improved reliability and reduced risk of fuel-related issues.
This move will also boost ethanol production, directly benefiting farmers in India. Additionally, it will help reduce crude oil imports, leading to potential savings for the country. Policymakers are accelerating this transition, and in the future, an E30 standard could also be introduced.
While ethanol blending benefits the economy and agriculture sector, some motorists have reported reduced mileage, especially in older vehicles. However, the government has stated that while there may be a slight drop in efficiency, it is not significant enough to impact overall usability.
Despite this, many users are seeking more clarity and communication. Consumers are urging automobile manufacturers and regulatory bodies to conduct further testing to ensure the safety of ethanol-blended fuel, particularly for older vehicles that may not be fully E20-compatible. Some manufacturers like Royal Enfield also provide E20 compatible kits for older RE vehicles.
