Ather EL Platform Scooter Teased Ahead Of August 29 Launch

Ather Energy CEO Tarun Mehta has shared an assembly line image of the upcoming Ather EL platform scooter, giving the first real look at the new scooter from the Bangalore-based firm ahead of its launch at Ather Community Day on August 29.

The production scooter based on the Ather EL Platform is expected to be priced between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.25 lakh and it will mark Ather's entry into the mainstream commuter electric scooter segment. Mehta has also indicated that the August 29 event will include a bunch of launches, pointing to additional products or services beyond the EL platform scooter.

Ather EL Platform Scooter: Design And Specifications

The scooter's silhouette closely follows the EL01 concept and the design patent Ather filed last year. It retains a handlebar-mounted headlight and a wide LED daytime running light on the front apron.

Unlike the polymer body panels used across Ather's current line-up, the production version of the EL01 appears to get a metal body. The assembly line image also reveals a 14-inch front wheel paired with a 12-inch rear wheel.

Test mules of the Ater EL platform scooter have been spotted earlier and have shown a front disc and rear drum brake setup. The Ather EL scooter is also expected to get a seven-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity and connected features.

Underpinning the new scooter is Ather's EL platform, developed using data from over 26 lakh kilometres of field testing. The company has said the platform is modular enough to support scooters across different sizes and use cases, with the scalable architecture expected to underpin multiple body styles in the future.

Battery capacities on the EL platform will range from 2kWh to 5kWh. It also features a silent gear-drive motor, an onboard charger and longer service intervals than Ather's existing models.

At its expected price of Rs 1-1.25 lakh, the new scooter would undercut Ather's own line-up. The Rizta starts at Rs 1.21 lakh, while the 450 series is priced from Rs 1.28 lakh, and the new EL-based scooter is also expected to compete with the Bajaj Chetak C25 and the TVS iQube in the mass-market electric scooter space.
