Triumph's upcoming cafe racer, the Thruxton 400, is set to debut soon. This model, built on the Speed 400 platform, showcases both cosmetic and functional changes. The official launch is anticipated later this week, with test mules providing insights into what enthusiasts can expect from this new offering.
Design & Styling Differences
The Thruxton 400 stands out with its classic cafe racer aesthetics. It features a half fairing, clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors, and a single-seat setup with a rear cowl. The fuel tank has been redesigned for a sharper look. A dual-tone paint scheme is evident, with red and silver as one of the options. These elements distinguish it from the Speed 400.
Additional design changes include a new remote brake reservoir reminiscent of larger European bikes. The Thruxton 400 also sports a blacked-out USD fork compared to the gold-coloured one on the Speed 400. However, these differences are primarily cosmetic as both models share similar underpinnings.
Chassis & Ergonomics Changes
Both motorcycles share the same chassis components like the frame, USD front fork, and rear monoshock. They ride on 17-inch alloy wheels equipped with disc brakes and dual-channel ABS. However, tyre choices differ; while the Speed 400 uses Vredestein rubber, the Thruxton 400 appears to come with MRF tyres akin to those on the Speed T4.
The ergonomic setup varies between these models. The Thruxton's lower clip-on handlebars create a forward-leaning riding position. In contrast, the Speed 400 offers a more relaxed posture due to its conventional handlebar placement.
Pricing Expectations
Historically, Thruxton models have been priced higher than their Speed counterparts in Triumph's lineup. It's likely that this pricing strategy will continue with these new models. However, cost-saving measures like a simpler tail light design and non-adjustable levers might influence pricing for the Thruxton 400.
