5 Worst Trends On Bikes: Hazards On Two Wheels

The motorcycle market often sees trends that prioritize style over safety, practicality, or durability. While some of these features look sporty or modern, they end up causing more problems than benefits. Here are five bike trends that really need to go away for good.

1. Half Chain Covers

Many modern bikes come with half chain covers to look sporty and aggressive. However, this exposes the chain and sprockets to dust, mud, and debris. The result? Faster wear and tear, reduced performance, frequent adjustments, and higher maintenance costs. Also, half chain covers offer very little protection from loose cloths such as sarees getting stuck.

2. Small Rear Mudguards

Minimalist rear mudguards might make a bike look sleek, but they fail at their primary job: blocking mud and water. During rains, the tyre disperses water directly upward, splashing the rider, pillion, and even vehicles behind. This not only makes the bike filthy but also creates a road hazard. A functional mudguard is far more valuable than a "sporty" short one.

3. White LED Headlights

While white LED headlights look premium, they often compromise real-world visibility. The cool white light works poorly in rain and fog, where warmer halogen beams actually perform better. On top of that, poorly calibrated LEDs cause glare for oncoming traffic, increasing accident risks. A headlamp's job is to illuminate safely, not to blind others.

4. Single-Channel ABS

ABS is one of the most important safety features in modern bikes. Yet, many manufacturers in India still offer only single-channel ABS (usually on the front wheel) to save costs. This is dangerous in a country where riders heavily rely on the rear brake. Dual-channel ABS can prevent countless accidents and doesn't add significantly to the cost. It should be the industry standard, not a premium feature.

5. Split Grab Rails

Split grab rails may look sporty, but they compromise pillion safety. In India, where pillion riding is extremely common (including side-saddle seating), these rails provide poor grip and stability. A sudden slip can easily cause a fall and fatal injuries. A single-piece grab rail may look old-school, but it is much safer and more practical for everyday riding.

DriveSpark Thinks

Motorcycles are about freedom, thrill, and practicality. But when manufacturers prioritize style gimmicks over rider and pillion safety, it creates unnecessary risks. It's time these 5 trends vanish from our roads, making bikes not just stylish, but also safer and smarter.
