Premium Motorcycles To Become More Affordable In India: Import Duty Reduced
The recent Union Budget has introduced a reduction in basic customs duty for imported motorcycles, including complete built units (CBUs), semi-knocked down (SKD), and completely knocked down (CKD) units. This change is likely to make premium motorcycles more affordable in India. The duty on CBUs with engine capacities not exceeding 1,600cc has been reduced from 50% to 40%, while SKD units see a decrease from 25% to 20%, and CKD units from 15% to 10%.
Impact On Larger Motorcycles
For motorcycles with engines over 1,600cc, the reduction is even more significant. The duty on CBUs drops from 50% to 30%. SKD units will now have a duty of 20%, down from 25%, and CKD units will see a reduction from 15% to 10%. These changes are expected to lower the prices of larger motorcycles in the Indian market.

Changes In Car Import Duties
While there is also a reduction in basic customs duty for imported cars and other motor vehicles, the overall impact remains uncertain. This uncertainty arises due to the addition of the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC) components. AIDC was introduced a few years ago to enhance agricultural infrastructure and initially applied to items like gold, silver, alcoholic beverages, and crude palm oil.
Historical Context & International Relations
The timing of this duty reduction coincides with Donald Trump's presidency in the United States once again. Previously, Trump had criticised India for its high tariffs, using Harley-Davidson motorcycles as an example. The current changes may influence international trade relations between India and the United States.
The reduction in motorcycle import duties aligns with India's growing preference for premium models. As these changes take effect, consumers can expect more affordable options in the premium motorcycle segment. This shift reflects broader trends in consumer preferences towards higher-end models within the Indian market.
Overall, these adjustments in import duties are poised to make premium motorcycles more accessible to Indian consumers while potentially impacting international trade dynamics.
