New KTM 990 RC R Breaks Cover: Pure Track DNA Meets Street Precision
After months of teasers and prototype showcases, KTM has finally unveiled the production-spec 990 RC R, the long-awaited spiritual successor to the iconic RC8. The supersport motorcycle has been launched in the US at USD 13,949 (approximately Rs 12.38 lakh) and represents KTM's return to the high-performance sportbike segment.
The KTM 990 RC R carries the brand's latest design philosophy, instantly recognisable by its aggressive and aerodynamic styling. The large front fascia incorporates a compact projector LED headlamp nestled within a sleek housing, flanked by prominent winglets that enhance high-speed stability.

The side fairings stretch along the length of the bike, concealing most of the engine and flowing smoothly into the muscular fuel tank. Towards the rear, a short, upswept tail section adds a touch of sportiness, though the small pillion seat appears more symbolic than practical, highlighting the bike's pure performance intent.
Underneath the striking bodywork lies the same 947cc parallel-twin engine that powers the 990 Duke. However, KTM has reworked several components - including the ECU mapping and exhaust system - to tailor the engine's behaviour for track performance and a more aggressive top-end response. Power has been bumped up to 128bhp, while peak torque remains at 103Nm, offering a potent combination of speed and control that stays true to KTM's "Ready to Race" philosophy.
Complementing the engine is a suite of high-end hardware. The 990 RC R features Brembo four-piston Hypure callipers for exceptional braking power and a fully adjustable WP Apex suspension setup at both ends for precision handling on track and road alike.
The electronics package is equally impressive, with features like traction control, wheelie control, and launch control, all of which adjust dynamically across the four standard riding modes - Rain, Street, Sport, and Performance. For those who want even sharper dynamics, KTM offers an optional Track mode. All electronic settings and performance data are managed through a large 8.8-inch TFT display, providing riders with an intuitive interface to fine-tune their experience.
Despite its global unveiling, the KTM 990 RC R is unlikely to be launched in India anytime soon. However, Indian enthusiasts looking for a similar track-oriented motorcycle can consider the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, which offers a comparable experience in terms of agility and speed. For riders seeking a blend of comfort and performance, other viable alternatives include the Triumph Daytona 660, Honda CBR650R, and Suzuki GSX-8R.
DriveSpark Thinks
With its razor-sharp styling, advanced electronics, and pure racing DNA, the KTM 990 RC R marks a bold return for KTM into the world of big, track-focused supersport machines - a segment it once dominated with the legendary RC8.
