Indian Scooter Industry Achieves 17% Sales Growth, Reaching 68.53 Lakh Units In FY2025
The Indian scooter industry experienced a notable achievement in the financial year ending March 31, 2025, with a 17% rise in sales, reaching 68.53 lakh units. This growth was driven by new and updated models, increased demand from rural and semi-urban regions, and a significant boost from electric scooters.
The diverse range of available scooters has led to a growing consumer preference for these vehicles, contributing to the industry's record-breaking sales figures.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India retained its top position with a 41.50% market share, slightly down from 43.33% the previous year. The company sold 28.4 lakh scooters in FY2025, marking a 12% increase from the prior year. Honda's success was largely attributed to its popular models such as Activa 110, Activa 125, Dio 110, and Dio 125.
Electric scooters played a crucial role in this year's success, accounting for 11% of total scooter sales and exceeding 7.73 lakh units. This reflects a growing interest in eco-friendly transportation options. Ather Energy reported a 44% increase in sales, highlighting the rising demand for electric vehicles in India.
TVS Motor and Co. also saw an increase in market share, reaching 26% this year from last year's 25%. TVS sold 18.3 lakh scooters, achieving a significant 25% year-on-year growth. This growth was driven by its extensive lineup including Jupiter 110, Jupiter 125, NTorq, and Zest. Notably, TVS's iQube electric scooter saw a remarkable 44% increase in sales, surpassing 2.73 lakh units.

The festive season, especially October, recorded the highest monthly sales with over 7.21 lakh scooters sold. Sales exceeded 6 lakh units in August and September and surpassed 5 lakh units during the other eight months. December saw the lowest sales at 4.18 lakh scooters as customers often delay purchases to the new year.
Suzuki Motorcycle India reported impressive figures with a 15% increase in sales, totaling over 10.24 lakh scooters. The Access model remained its best-seller, showcasing Suzuki's enduring popularity in the scooter segment.
Changing Preferences Among Consumers
The popularity of scooters is linked to India's congested traffic conditions where maneuverability is key. Scooters offer convenience compared to larger gear bikes, making them a preferred choice for many commuters.
Yamaha and Bajaj Auto also made significant progress with Yamaha's sales increasing by 13%. Bajaj Auto doubled its market share to 4%, thanks to a substantial 140% rise in sales.

Diverse Scooter Options Fuel Market Expansion
Scooters are gaining traction due to their varied features and segments. Previously seen as one-size-fits-all vehicles, today's market offers options like maxi-scooters, premium models, and electric variants. This diversity has spurred industry growth in India.
The previous best year for scooter sales was FY2018 with 67.1 lakh units sold. FY2025 surpassed this by selling over 1.33 lakh more scooters with an average of 5.71 lakh units sold monthly based on current figures.
Future Prospects for Petrol vs Electric Scooters
While the future looks promising for scooters overall, petrol-powered models may face challenges as consumers increasingly consider electric alternatives due to cost factors like petrol expenses versus electricity bills.
The range of electric scooters remains a concern since they cannot be refueled like petrol models when depleted.
The record-breaking sales of FY2025 indicate a strong and expanding market for Indian scooters. With Honda Activa leading and manufacturers like TVS, Bajaj Auto, and Ather Energy showing impressive electric vehicle sales figures, the future of scooter sales appears bright as the industry shifts towards sustainable transportation solutions.
