Honda Patents New Steering Assist Technology For Motorcycles

Japanese auto manufacturer Honda Motorcycles has filed a new patent for an active steering assist system for two-wheelers. This new rider-assist technology is designed to enhance safety by helping prevent crashes in critical situations. Here's what Honda's New Steering assist system offers riders.

Honda Steering Assist System - Two Wheelers

Modern motorcycles feature several advanced safety systems, including dual-channel ABS, traction control, wheelie control, stability control, and even airbags on some models. Honda is now taking motorcycle safety a step further with its new automatic steering assist system, which works much like an ADAS safety feature in cars - but designed specifically for motorcycles.

Compared to cars, riding a motorcycle is far riskier since the rider is exposed and vulnerable to crashes. To counter these uncertain situations and provide riders with additional support and safety, Honda has filed a patent for a steering intervention and assist system.

This technology is activated through sensors and cameras. With multiple cameras and sensors monitoring the surroundings, the system detects vehicles in blind spots or those approaching from the rear. When it detects a potential collision, it gently intervenes and guides the motorcycle safely away from danger without sudden or unsettling movements.

Additional Safety for Riders

Honda's steering system doesn't take full control of the motorcycle. Instead, it provides calibrated steering assistance, helping riders avoid crashes while maintaining stability. This technology gives riders greater confidence on the road, similar to ADAS features in four-wheelers such as lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot steering correction.

To ensure stability, Honda has programmed the system to intervene in the steering in a safe and calculated manner. This system only intervenes in critical situations, particularly when it detects that the rider has not reacted to the potential danger.

In the future, Honda's automatic steering system may also integrate additional rider-assist functions such as blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking.

Self-Balancing Motorcycle Tech

Apart from this automatic steering control system, Honda has also patented several other advanced technologies for two-wheelers, including self-balancing systems. This particular technology varies from BMW's similar self-balancing technology.

Instead of using a heavy gyroscope, Honda's self-balancing technology utilises a robotics-derived control system. It operates using the front fork geometry and steer-by-wire inputs. The system functions at low speeds as well as when the motorcycle is standing.
