Hero Maverick 440 Discontinued In India Due To Poor Sales

Hero has decided to discontinue its Mavrick 440 motorcycle due to declining sales. The bike, launched just 18 months ago, was Hero's most premium offering. It was based on the Harley-Davidson X440 platform but featured distinct visual and mechanical differences. Despite initial hopes, sales have dwindled significantly this year.

The Mavrick 440 entered the market in early 2024 as a roadster variant of the Harley-Davidson X440, which Hero also manufactures in India. It stood out with a unique design and smaller 17-inch wheels. The bike aimed to compete in the modern classic segment against models like the Royal Enfield Classic 350 and Honda CB350.

Sales Performance

Despite its appealing price range of Rs 2.00 lakh to Rs 2.25 lakh (ex-showroom, India), the Mavrick struggled in sales compared to its sibling, the Harley-Davidson X440. In the first nine months of FY2025, Hero sold 8,974 units of the Harley X440 but only managed to sell 3,214 units of the Mavrick.

By January 2025, monthly sales had dropped to just over 50 units and have remained at single digits or zero since April 2025. This decline prompted Hero to cease production of the Mavrick 440, although it is still listed on their website.

Market Strategy

This decision likely aims to provide more focus on the Harley brand within Hero's Premia dealer network. By discontinuing the Mavrick, Hero can allocate more resources to promote and expand the Harley-Davidson lineup.

The Mavrick was Hero's first foray into challenging established players in the modern classic motorcycle segment. Despite positive reviews highlighting its torquey engine and easy handling, it couldn't capture a significant market share.

Future Prospects

As two years have passed since the launch of the Harley-Davidson X440, there is speculation about another model being introduced on this platform later this year. This move could further strengthen Hero's position in collaboration with Harley-Davidson.

DriveSpark Thinks

The discontinuation of the Mavrick reflects Hero's strategic shift towards enhancing its partnership with Harley-Davidson and focusing on models that resonate better with consumers.
