Mandatory ABS For All Two-Wheelers In India From 2026 - Plus Life-Saving "Accessory"
The government plans to enhance road safety by mandating anti-lock brakes (ABS) for all new two-wheelers from January 1, 2026. This rule will apply to all new scooters and motorcycles, regardless of engine size. The government has also made it mandatory for dealers to provide 2 BIS certified to customers on the purchase of a new two-wheeler.
In the fiscal year 2025, India saw the sale of 1.96 crore two-wheelers, as reported by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Among these, over 1.53 crore vehicles had engines of 125 cc or less, making up more than 78% of total sales.

Understanding ABS
An anti-lock braking system (ABS) prevents wheels from locking during sudden braking, reducing skidding risks. It also shortens stopping distances and can lower crash chances by 35-45%, according to studies. Currently, single-channel ABS is mandatory for two-wheelers above 125 cc, but some manufacturers offer it in smaller models too.
The Sad Stats Behind the New Regulation
The decision is driven by alarming road safety statistics. Annually, over 69,000 people die in two-wheeler accidents in India. Half of these fatalities are due to riders not wearing helmets. Two-wheelers account for 44% of all road accidents and related deaths, despite being just one vehicle category.
The human toll is starkest among those aged 18 to 45, who make up about 67% of accident deaths. These figures represent young professionals and family members whose lives could be saved with improved safety measures.
Impact On Prices
Introducing mandatory ABS will slightly increase the cost of new two-wheelers from 2026. Estimates suggest that entry-level models may see a price rise of Rs. 2,500-3,500 due to this feature. Currently, models with single-channel ABS have a front disc brake; non-ABS versions use drum brakes at both ends.
DriveSpark Thinks!
The move to require ABS on all two-wheelers from January 1, 2026, is seen as a positive step towards enhancing road safety and should hopefully ensure fatalities on the road come down significantly as will hopefully the order for dealers to give 2 BIS-certifed helmets with the purchase ieach new two-wheeler
