Yamaha R9 Supersport Motorcycle Revealed: R6 Successor? Check Out All The Details Here
After much speculation and anticipation in the motorcycling circles, Yamaha has unveiled the R9 supersport, a machine that marries the MT-09's robust triple-cylinder engine with a brand-new chassis and superior components.
This introduction signals the birth of a sportbike that not only draws power from the acclaimed 890cc, 3-cylinder engine of the MT-09, delivering 119hp and 93Nm of torque, but also marks a shift in Yamaha's supersport segment, positioning itself as a successor of sorts to the R6.

That being said, unlike its naked counterpart (Yamaha MT-09), the R9 introduces a slight variation in its final drive gearing, while maintaining the engine's core performance characteristics.
It is also worth mentioning that the engine is cradled in an innovative aluminium Deltabox frame, tipping the scales at a mere 9.7kg. Yamaha touts this as the lightest frame among its supersport offerings.
The R9's agility and response are further enhanced by a fully adjustable suspension system, comprising a 43mm KYB USD fork and a monoshock equipped with a remote preload adjuster, a setup that Yamaha claims was developed concurrently with the 2025 R1 model.

Advanced Electronics and Rider Aids
The R9 is equipped with a comprehensive suite of electronics aimed at enhancing the riding experience. This includes dual-channel ABS as standard, along with a multitude of other sophisticated aids. Riders can choose from three preset modes—Sport, Street, and Rain—tailored for different riding conditions.
Additionally, two customizable modes and four Track modes allow for personalized setup. A six-axis IMU supports cornering ABS, traction control, slide control, brake control, along with lift control, power modes, engine braking modes, and a back slip regulator. The inclusion of a bidirectional quickshifter and cruise control further underscores the R9's focus on performance and convenience.
All of the R9's technological features and settings are accessible through a 5-inch colour TFT dash, which can be synced with a smartphone via Yamaha's MyRide app. This integration enables riders to receive phone calls, messages, and other notifications directly on the dashboard, enhancing connectivity on the go.

Design and Handling Innovations
Yamaha has meticulously designed the R9 to incorporate aspects typical of a supersport bike, including an aggressive riding posture facilitated by a high seat and clip-on handlebars positioned below the top yoke.
In addition, the bike sports winglets that contribute to downforce at high speeds, although specific figures have yet to be disclosed. With a 14-litre fuel tank—identical in capacity to the MT-09—the R9 reaches a filled weight of 195kg, making it only slightly heavier than the MT-09 by 2kg.
Currently, Yamaha offers a single variant of the R9, leaving the door open for the potential introduction of higher-spec M or SP models in the future. Interestingly, Yamaha has also fitted the MT-09 with its Y-AMT gearbox, hinting at the possibility of this feature making its way to the R9.
Although Yamaha India has expressed intentions to bring some of its larger bikes to the Indian market, there's no confirmation yet on the R9's arrival. Motorcycle enthusiasts in India remain hopeful for an official announcement concerning the launch of this eagerly awaited sportbike.
