TVS Motor Company To Begin Norton Motorcycle Production In India

TVS Motor Company is set to manufacture Norton motorcycles in India, leveraging its extensive manufacturing and supply-chain capabilities. This development follows the announcement that TVS-owned Norton Motorcycles will introduce six new models over the next three years, with sales extending to the Indian market.

Production will continue at Norton's new Solihull facility in the UK. However, TVS plans to start manufacturing these bikes at its Hosur plant by the end of next year. Sudarshan Venu, MD of TVS Motor, highlighted the company's commitment to high-quality manufacturing as a key strength they bring to Norton.

Norton’s Manufacturing Strategy

"I believe high-quality manufacturing is what TVS really brings. It is the strength of TVS. Therefore, we will definitely use that fully to leverage Norton. But at the same time, they (the bikes) will be uniquely Norton, which is why we're having European design, European marketing, European engineering as well. And so we will bring this combination together to create products which are uniquely Norton," said Venu.

The first all-new product under TVS ownership is expected next year. This move aligns with TVS's strategy of combining its manufacturing prowess with Norton's European design and engineering expertise to produce unique motorcycles.

Global Manufacturing Trends

Norton joins other premium European brands like Triumph and Ducati in manufacturing outside their home countries. Triumph and Ducati produce most of their range in Thailand. Similarly, TVS already manufactures BMW motorcycles at its Hosur facilities, including the 310cc platform and the new CE 02 electric scooter.

While details about the specific segments these new Norton motorcycles will target remain scarce, it is clear that Norton will maintain its premium brand status. Locally manufactured bikes are expected to be more affordable compared to other imported premium motorcycles.

This strategic move by TVS aims to enhance Norton's market presence while ensuring competitive pricing for Indian consumers. The combination of European design and Indian manufacturing could position Norton favourably in both domestic and international markets.
