Bajaj Auto Faces Lawsuit From SG Corporate Mobility For Freedom Trademark Infringement
SG Corporate Mobility Pvt Ltd, the parent company of LML, has initiated legal action against Bajaj Auto Ltd. The lawsuit, filed in the Delhi High Court, accuses Bajaj Auto of unauthorised use of the 'Freedom' trademark for its new CNG motorbikes. SG Corporate Mobility claims this infringes on their statutory trademark rights and harms the established reputation of the LML 'Freedom' brand.
The lawsuit highlights SG Corporate Mobility's commitment to protecting its intellectual property and preserving the legacy of the 'Freedom' brand. The company emphasised that the 'Freedom' trademark gained significant recognition in 2002 with the launch of the LML Freedom motorbike by LML Ltd. This model achieved considerable success in India and remains strongly associated with LML Ltd.

Trademark History and Legal Action
In 2021, SG Corporate Mobility acquired the rights to both 'Freedom' and 'LML' trademarks from LML Ltd. This transfer included all associated goodwill and reputation. Since then, SG Corporate Mobility has been dedicated to maintaining these iconic names while planning future product launches under the 'Freedom' label.
The company stated, "In 2002, LML Ltd. launched its motorbikes bearing the trademark 'FREEDOM’ which was a massive success in the Indian market and still carries an immense goodwill and reputation in the minds of the public at large which is solely associated with LML Ltd. The iconic trademark 'FREEDOM’ along with the trademark 'LML’ were assigned to SG Corporate Mobility Pvt. Ltd. in 2021 by LML Ltd. along with goodwill and reputation associated with the mark 'FREEDOM’."

What Was The LML Freedom?
The LML Freedom is a commuter motorcycle manufactured by Lohia Machinery Limited (LML) in India. It was initially launched in 2002 and has undergone various updates and redesigns over the years to keep up with the competition.
Powering the LML Freedom was a 110cc engine that produced 8.5bhp and 8.5Nm of peak torque. This engine came linked to a 4-speed Mesh Gearbox.
Future Plans for Iconic Brands
SG Corporate Mobility is determined to protect its intellectual property rights through this lawsuit as part of their broader strategy. They aim to introduce a new range of scooters and motorbikes under both "Freedom" and "LML" brands, reviving these well-known names in the market.
The case is currently pending before the court, awaiting further proceedings. SG Corporate Mobility remains focused on safeguarding its trademarks while preparing for future product launches under these historic labels.
