Royal Enfield Scram 440 Motorcycle Unveiled – Updated & Upgraded

Royal Enfield is on a spree of unveiling new motorcycles. The latest of the lot is the new Royal Enfield Scram 440. Though not an entirely new motorcycle, it is a collection of plenty of upgraded bits from the Royal Enfield Scram 411.

With products such as the Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 already playing the role of off-road focussed scrambler motorcycle in the company's lineup, some may feel like the addition of the Royal Enfield Scram 440 could confuse buyers.

Also, since many prefer the newer Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 motorcycle over the Royal Enfield Scram 411 model, upgrading the latter seems like an unnecessary allocation of resources.

However, in reality, despite the fact that the Guerrilla 450 is an overall better motorcycle, the price gap between the Guerrilla 450 and Scram 411 is substantial for most buyers in India. So this creates a dilemma for many buyers.

Now, with the Royal Enfield Scram 440, Royal Enfield is trying to reduce the gap to the Royal Enfield Guerilla 450 without the penalty of added financial burden. Also, many still prefer the simplicity of the Scram 411 over the Guerrilla 450, which overall gives Royal Enfield enough reasons to develop the Scram 440.

For starters, the newer Royal Enfield Scram 440 motorcycle features a bigger engine, upgraded chassis with improved stiffness and better brakes compared to the Royal Enfield Scram 411. Other noticeable changes include a new clutch, LED headlights, and a 6-speed gearbox.

According to Royal Enfield, the Scram 440 uses a 443cc engine, thanks to the additional 3mm bore compared to the Scram 411's engine. This has helped in generating a 4.5 per cent increase in power (25.4bhp @ 6,250rpm) and 6.5 per cent increase in torque (34Nm @ 4,000rpm).

To suit the character of this uprated engine, the Royal Enfield Scram 440 uses a 6-speed gearbox instead of the 5-speed unit in the Scram 411. The addition of 6th gear is a major upgrade, especially for those who do plenty of long rides.

As mentioned, the Royal Enfield Scram 440 features a slightly uprated chassis with improved strength - Aiding riders with more confidence while tackling rougher terrain. Apart from this, the Scram 440 also features a bigger piston front caliper (30/32mm vs 26/26mm) - Improving braking performance and feel.

Coming to the specs, the Royal Enfield Scram 440 uses 41mm telescopic forks with 190mm of wheel travel at the front and mono shock set up at the rear with 180mm of wheel travel.

Braking duty on the new Royal Enfield Scram 440 is carried by a 300mm disc brake at the front and a 240mm disc brake at the rear. Additionally, the bike features a switchable (rear) dual-channel ABS unit.

The Royal Enfield Scram 440 also comes with a new pull-type clutch, which reduces lever effort by 750 grams.

That being said, in addition to all the above changes and upgrades, the new Royal Enfield Scram 440 also comes with new colour options. This will give the model a much fresher look overall.

DriveSpark Thinks

With the introduction of the new Royal Enfield Scram 440, the automaker is trying to bridge the gap to the Royal Enfield Guerilla 450 without the penalty of added financial burden. That being said, Royal Enfield has to price the Scram 440 very close to the outgoing Scram 411 to make the model successful in India.
