Royal Enfield's 650cc Models Propel Growth In Midsize Motorcycle Sector

The 500-800cc motorcycle segment is the only category where midsize market leader saw year-on-year growth from April to June 2024. Royal Enfield sold 11,943 units out of the total 12,408 units dispatched in this segment.

Royal Enfield, a dominant player in the midsize motorcycle market, recorded total wholesales of 204,686 motorcycles in the first quarter of FY2025. This figure represents a slight decline of 1% compared to the same period last year when they dispatched 207,171 units.

Strong Demand for 650cc Models

The company's 650cc twins—Continental GT 650 and Interceptor 650—along with the Super Meteor 650 and Shotgun 650, all powered by a 648cc engine, continue to see robust demand. These models helped mitigate a more significant quarterly sales decline for Royal Enfield in Q1 FY2025.

According to SIAM industry wholesales data, Royal Enfield sold a total of 11,943 units between April and June 2024.

This marks a substantial increase of 79% year-on-year compared to Q1 FY2024's sales of 6,684 units. The company commanded an impressive 96% share of the total dispatches in the 500-800cc sub-segment.

Market Performance Across Segments

Despite being the market leader with a commanding share of 94% in the 250-350cc segment, Royal Enfield saw a year-on-year decline of 3% in Q1 FY2025 sales.

They sold 183,450 units compared to last year's figure of 189,647 units. In the 350-500cc sub-segment, which includes models like Scram 411 and Himalayan (452cc), sales dropped by 14%, from last year's figure of 10,840 units to this year's total of 9,293 units.

India Kawasaki Motors ranks second in the bike category with sales of 184 units and an impressive year-on-year growth rate of 74%. The company offers models such as Ninja 650, Versys 650, Vulcan S, Z650, Z650RS and ZX-6R.

Other Competitors

Triumph Motorcycles India follows closely behind Kawasaki with sales of 162 units. This represents a significant year-on-year growth rate of 238%, up from just 48 units last year. Triumph retails models like Trident 660 and Tiger Sport 660.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India ranks fourth with sales of its XL750 model reaching a total of 78 units. Suzuki Motorcycles India follows with sales figures showing they sold only 36 units of their V-Strom DL800DE model.

Royal Enfield Leads Midsize Motorcycle Boom 3

The midsize motorcycle sub-segment has seen notable growth across various categories. The highest year-on-year growth was observed in the 500-800cc category at an impressive rate of 81%. This is followed by a growth rate of approximately 73% in the 350-500cc segment while the 250-350cc segment experienced a slight decline of about 3.50%.

"The demand for our new range has been encouraging," said an official from Royal Enfield. "We are optimistic about maintaining this momentum." This trend indicates that while some segments face challenges, others continue to thrive due to strong consumer interest and strategic product offerings.
