Camp Kharu: Royal Enfield's Eco-Friendly Gateway To Ladakh's Wonders
Royal Enfield has introduced Camp Kharu, a pioneering Green Pit Stop in Ladakh, marking a significant step in its journey towards sustainable travel. Located on the Leh-Manali highway, a mere distance from Leh city, it serves as a gateway to the mesmerizing locales of Pangong, Tso Moriri, and Hanle.
This eco-friendly stopover, sprawling over 1,500 sq ft with its unique rammed earth construction, offers a serene view of the Zanskar range from the banks of the Indus river.

Travelers heading towards Ladakh's breathtaking destinations now have a remarkable new rest stop. Camp Kharu, nestled within the Kharu market's vibrant community, is not just about providing a pause for refreshment and rest.
It's a hub for cultural exchange and experiencing the local heritage, with information on Intangible Cultural Heritage experiences and a curated list of homestays, including those supported by Royal Enfield.
Bidisha Dey, Executive Director of Eicher Group Foundation, shared, "Camp Kharu embodies our belief in the transformative influence of travel and our commitment to leaving every place better. By focusing on sustainable architecture, community engagement, and cultural preservation, we aim to offer travelers a unique way to experience Ladakh while benefiting local communities."
The facility is managed by six women from Kharu village, who bring authentic Ladakhi cuisine to visitors' tables, using ingredients sourced locally.

These women, aged between 37 and 55, were chosen by the village Panchayat and have undergone extensive training in various skills necessary for running such a facility, including entrepreneurship and hospitality, under Royal Enfield's guidance.
Camp Kharu stands as a testament to sustainable building practices, constructed using rammed earth techniques that ensure the building remains naturally insulated throughout the year.

The addition of solar panels and water refilling stations underscores the commitment to environmental sustainability. The Camp offers free wi-fi, charging points, and features space for community activities and exhibitions promoting Ladakhi culture.
This initiative is a collaborative effort involving Royal Enfield's Social Mission, the Rural Development Department/Leh Development Authority, Kharu Nambardar, and the local community. It addresses the essential need for public hygiene facilities in Kharu while promoting community entrepreneurship and environmental sustainability.
