Leading The Charge: Ola Electric Achieves 3 Lakh EV Sales Milestone In India

Ola Electric has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer in India to retail 3 lakh units within a single calendar year. This accomplishment was recorded on September 9, coinciding with World EV Day. According to Vahan retail sales data, Ola Electric delivered 3,04,393 units as of September 10 at 11 am.

In the first eight months of 2024 and the initial days of September, Ola Electric sold 3,04,393 units. This figure already surpasses its total sales for CY2023 by 37,028 units. The company holds a commanding 41 percent share of the electric two-wheeler market in India. This is significantly ahead of TVS Motor Co's 18 percent and Bajaj Auto's 14 percent market shares.

Electric Two-Wheeler Market Dynamics

The electric two-wheeler segment is currently the largest contributor to EV sales in India, accounting for a substantial 57 percent share. The industry is poised to exceed the one-million sales mark for the first time in CY2024. To achieve this milestone, strong double-digit growth will be necessary during the September-December period.

Ola Electric has consistently led the market by being the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to hit various sales milestones—1 lakh, 2 lakh, and now 3 lakh units. In CY2022, Ola registered sales of 1,09,396 units, outperforming Ather Energy and TVS Motor Co combined. By CY2023, Ola's sales surged to 2,67,365 units, marking a remarkable year-on-year growth of 144 percent.

Competitive Landscape

TVS Motor Co and Bajaj Auto are also key players in the electric two-wheeler market. TVS has sold 1,32,078 iQubes from January to September 9 in CY2024. Meanwhile, Bajaj Auto has sold 1,05,680 Chetaks during the same period. Both companies launched their e-scooters in January 2020 and have been competing closely ever since.

The competition between TVS and Bajaj has intensified over time. In CY2023, TVS had a lead of 94,642 units over Bajaj. However, this gap has narrowed significantly to just 26,398 units in CY2024 so far.

Future Projections

With four months remaining in the current calendar year, Ola Electric is expected to surpass sales of 4 lakh units. The company has averaged monthly sales of approximately 37,220 units from January to August this year. This consistent performance indicates that Ola will continue to dominate the market.

The electric two-wheeler industry needs robust growth in the final months of CY2024 to reach its ambitious target of two million units sold for the first time ever. Achieving this goal would further solidify India's position as a leading market for electric vehicles globally.

The ongoing rivalry between legacy players like TVS Motor Co and Bajaj Auto adds an interesting dynamic to the market landscape. Both companies are striving to increase their market shares while keeping up with new entrants like Ola Electric.

This year has been pivotal for India's electric vehicle sector as it continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. With major players achieving significant milestones and setting new records, the future looks promising for electric mobility in India.
