MotoGP 2027 New Rules: Downsizing Engines For A Safer Race

MotoGP, the premier class of motorcycle racing, is set for a significant transformation starting in 2027, with the introduction of new rules aimed at enhancing safety and sustainability within the sport.

Among the most notable changes are the reduction of engine size, the implementation of more stringent aerodynamic regulations, and the prohibition of all ride-height devices.

Engine Downsizing and Sustainability

Since 2012, MotoGP has operated with 1,000cc engines, but from 2027, these will be downsized to 850cc. The maximum cylinder bore will also decrease from 81mm to 75mm. This adjustment is expected to reduce top speeds, thereby increasing the safety of the sport while also boosting mileage. These engines will continue to be four-stroke units.

The move towards smaller engines reflects a broader push to make MotoGP engines more relevant to road usage. Additionally, the number of engines allowed per season will be lowered to six for a 20-round calendar and to seven for calendars featuring 21 or 22 rounds.

Aerodynamic Adjustments and Ride-Height Device Ban

The current concession system will be maintained, but all teams will start the 2027 season in Rank B, with assessments scheduled mid-season for any adjustments. New entrants or any manufacturer not participating in 2026 will begin in Rank D, allowing them unlimited testing, six wildcard entries, and other benefits.

In a significant step towards fairness and safety, GPS data from all riders will be shared with all teams after each session, facilitating progress for less performing teams and riders at controlled costs. This initiative will also enrich the insights available to fans globally.

Commitment to 100 Percent Sustainable Fuel

As previously announced, MotoGP will transition to using 100 percent sustainable fuel by 2027. This eco-friendly fuel will be either synthetic or derived from bio sources, marking a significant stride towards environmental sustainability in motorsports.

Concomitantly, fuel tank capacity will be reduced from 22 litres to 20 litres for the main race and from 12 litres to 11 litres for sprint races, further underscoring MotoGP's commitment to sustainability.
