KTM Unveils Innovative AMT Gearbox For Enhanced Riding Experience
KTM, a well-known two-wheeler manufacturer, has introduced an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) gearbox for its motorcycles. This new transmission aims to enhance the riding experience for bikers. The AMT system is designed to ease the challenges of riding in traffic-heavy areas by offering a feature similar to car gearboxes.
Initially, KTM has implemented this AMT system on the 1390 Super Adventure R prototype. The system is built around a centrifugal clutch, differing from traditional automatic and manual transmissions. This clutch is engineered to perform efficiently even at low speeds, preventing the bike from moving jerkily or stalling.
The AMT gearbox in KTM bikes allows for seamless gear shifts managed by the ECU and transmission control unit. This technology ensures quick gear changes without any interruptions, adapting to speed changes electronically and mechanically. Impressively, it shifts gears in just 50 milliseconds, outperforming human capabilities.
Riders can enjoy both manual and automatic modes with this AMT system. It offers flexibility through paddle shifts or a foot gear lever, providing comfort and convenience. Additionally, KTM has integrated three riding modes: Comfort, Street, and Sport, each offering a unique driving experience.
A notable addition is the Park gear feature in the AMT gearbox. Unlike traditional bikes with sequential gears, this system includes park, neutral, and six gears. Activating the park gear locks the rear wheel, preventing forward movement. This innovative technology is set to make its debut in the global two-wheeler market soon.
KTM's new AMT gearbox is expected to revolutionise urban commutes and off-road adventures. The system's ability to shift gears electronically without human intervention enhances performance significantly. It provides a smoother ride by eliminating the need for constant manual gear changes.
Industry Trends and Future Prospects
Other manufacturers like BMW Motorrad and Honda are also exploring automatic gearboxes for motorcycles. However, they have not yet disclosed when these innovations will be available in their models. KTM's advancement marks a significant step in motorcycle technology.
