Kawasaki KLX230 Vs Hero XPulse 200: Which Dual-Sport Motorcycle Reigns Supreme?

India recently saw the Kawasaki KLX230, a new dual-sport motorcycle. Putting this up with the Hero XPulse would be one of the most appropriate comparisons because both are in the same segment and category.

The KLX230 is significantly lighter than the Hero Xpulse 200 4V, weighing 22kg less. Both bikes are road-legal off-roaders, with one hailing from India and the other from Japan. This comparison delves into their specifications to see how they stack up against each other.

Both motorcycles feature single-cylinder engines around 200cc, but their designs differ. Despite having one less horsepower than the Hero, the KLX boasts a better power-to-weight ratio due to its lighter weight.

Engine and Output

The Kawasaki KLX230 generates 18.1hp at 8,000rpm and offers a torque of 18.3Nm at 6,400rpm. In contrast, the Hero Xpulse produces slightly more power at 19.2hp at 8,500rpm but has a lower torque of 17.35Nm at 6,500rpm.

The KLX's advantage lies in its six-speed gearbox compared to the five-speed on the Xpulse. The Hero Xpulse uses a modern 4-valve head, while the Kawasaki KLX sticks with a traditional 2-valve unit.

When it comes to dimensions, the KLX230 is more compact with a wheelbase of 1370mm compared to the Xpulse's 1427mm. This shorter wheelbase makes it more agile than its Indian counterpart. However, both bikes have tall seat heights of around 880mm and above.

Weight and Dimensions

The Kawasaki's kerb weight is just 139kg compared to the Hero's heavier frame at 161kg. This weight difference contributes significantly to the KLX's agility and ease of handling off-road. Additionally, the KLX offers an accessory lower seat option that reduces its height by another 14mm.

In terms of suspension and brakes, both bikes share similar setups with telescopic forks and monoshocks. However, the Xpulse provides damping adjustment on its fork, which is absent in the Kawasaki model. The wheel travel figures are close too; however, each bike excels in different areas.

Suspension and Brakes

The Hero Xpulse features a diamond frame design while the Kawasaki employs a perimeter frame for added sophistication. Both models come equipped with switchable ABS settings suitable for off-road conditions. The braking systems are comparable as well with disc brakes on both ends.

Neither bike is packed with advanced features; instead, they focus on durability for rugged terrains. Both offer basic LCD displays that can connect via Bluetooth for notifications and navigation prompts. LED headlights are standard on both models.

The Kawasaki KLX230 will be available in two colours: green and gray; whereas, the Hero Xpulse comes in only one colour option. Pricing details for the KLX230 will be announced in December with deliveries expected by January 2025.

Kawasaki plans to localise production of its components sourced from Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand before launching it in India through CKD units assembled locally by India Kawasaki Motors.
