India Is Now The Number One Two-Wheeler Market In The World: 2024 Reports
India has emerged as the world's largest two-wheeler market, surpassing China. According to Counterpoint Research, global two-wheeler sales increased by 4% year-on-year in the first half of 2024. Regions like Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, Africa, and India experienced positive growth during this period.
Growth in India's Two-Wheeler Market
India's domestic market saw a significant 22% year-on-year rise in two-wheeler sales during the first half of 2024. This growth is attributed to increased demand in rural areas and favourable monsoon conditions across the country. The second quarter also showed strong double-digit growth, solidifying India's position as the leading two-wheeler market globally.

In contrast, China and Southeast Asia experienced declines in sales volumes. Political and economic challenges contributed to reduced sales in Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Meanwhile, China's market faced a shift towards electrified bicycles for daily commuting due to pollution concerns.
Leading Manufacturers and Market Trends
The top ten two-wheeler manufacturers accounted for over 75% of global sales in the first half of 2024. Honda maintained its leadership position worldwide, followed by Hero MotoCorp from India, Yamaha, TVS Motor Company, and Yadea. Among these brands, TVS recorded the fastest growth with a 25% year-on-year increase.

Conversely, Yadea saw a significant decline of 29%, dropping to fifth place in global rankings. The shift towards electric bicycles in China has impacted traditional two-wheeler sales there. This trend is particularly evident within the electric motorcycle and scooter segments.
The overall positive performance of regions like Europe and North America contrasts with challenges faced by Southeast Asia and China. As consumer preferences evolve towards more sustainable options like electric bicycles in some markets, traditional two-wheeler manufacturers may need to adapt their strategies accordingly.
India's impressive growth highlights its potential as a dominant player in the global two-wheeler industry. With continued demand from rural areas and favourable weather conditions supporting sales growth domestically, India is well-positioned for future success in this sector.
