India's Big Bike Market Sees Unprecedented Growth In May 2024
India's big bike market has been growing rapidly, with sales more than doubling in May 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. This surge in demand is driven by both first-time motorcycle buyers and those upgrading from smaller bikes. Let's take a closer look at which big bikes have been the most popular.
Royal Enfield dominates the market
The Royal Enfield 650 lineup has consistently topped the charts, with its original 650 Twins (Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650) selling 2,885 units in May 2024. This represents a staggering 197.43% YoY growth compared to the 970 units sold in May 2023, resulting in a market share of 67.5%.

The Super Meteor 650 is Royal Enfield's second offering on this list, with 948 units sold and a market share of 22.18%. Combined, Royal Enfield sold a total of 3,833 units, securing an impressive market share of 89.68%.
Other popular big bikes
In third place is the Suzuki Hayabusa, selling 86 units in May 2024 – a massive increase from just three units sold the previous year. The Kawasaki Z900 took fourth place with sales of 66 units. Honda's XL750 Transalp ranked fifth, selling 41 units after previously struggling to sell any bikes in this segment.
| Rank | Motorcycles Sales | May-24 | May-23 | Growth (%) YoY |
| 1 | 650 Twin | 2,885 | 970 | 197.42 |
| 2 | Super Meteor | 948 | 838 | 13.13 |
| 3 | Hayabusa | 86 | 3 | 2766.67 |
| 4 | Z900 | 66 | 63 | 4.76 |
| 5 | XL750 | 41 | 0 | - |
| 6 | Ninja ZX-10R | 28 | 9 | 211.11 |
| 7 | ZX-6R | 26 | 0 | - |
| 8 | Versys 650 | 25 | 14 | 78.57 |
| 9 | Daytona 660 | 24 | 0 | - |
| 10 | Ninja 650 | 20 | 0 | - |
Kawasaki also saw success with its ZX-10R (28 units), newly launched ZX-6R (26 units), Versys 650 (25 units), and Ninja 650 (20 units). Triumph's Daytona 660 sold well too, with sales of 24 units.
Big bikes with lower sales figures
Some big bikes sold fewer than ten units in May 2024, including Honda Goldwing (8 units), Harley-Davidson Sportster S (6 units), Triumph Speed Twin 1200 (6 units), and Triumph Rocket III (3 units). Several motorcycles managed to sell just one unit each, such as Kawasaki Vulcan S, Aprilia RS660, and Harley Davidson Pan America.

However, seven big bikes failed to find any buyers during this period: Kawasaki Ninja 1000, Versys 1000, Z H2; Triumph Tiger 1200, Street Scrambler, Bonneville Speedmaster; and Harley-Davidson Roadking.
In conclusion, India's big bike market experienced significant growth in May 2024 compared to the previous year. Royal Enfield dominated the market with its popular offerings while other brands like Suzuki and Kawasaki also saw increased sales.
With more consumers showing interest in larger motorcycles, it will be interesting to see how this trend continues to evolve.
