Honda Activa EV Debut In March 2025 – E:Swap Technology & More
Honda is gearing up to introduce its first electric scooter in India by March 2025. Tsutsumu Otani, CEO of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Ltd., confirmed this timeline, noting that the launch has been delayed by about a year. Although the exact reasons for the delay remain undisclosed, Otani hinted that the new model might be Honda Activa EV, possibly under a different name.
Honda's Electric Two-Wheeler Plans
Initially, Honda considered converting the existing Activa into an electric vehicle (EV). However, this idea was scrapped as it didn't align with Honda's vision of creating a top-tier electric two-wheeler. Instead, Honda opted for a new, born-electric platform currently in development at their centre. This approach allows for advanced features like connectivity options, touchscreen displays, and keyless entry.

The new platform is expected to be lightweight and aerodynamic, enhancing the scooter's range and performance. This design will also give the scooter a sportier look. The focus on these features aims to meet modern consumer expectations and set a high standard in the electric scooter market.
Potential Gamechanger: Honda e:Swap Technology
One of the standout features of Honda's upcoming electric scooter could be its e:Swap battery swapping technology. This system allows users to swap out depleted batteries for fully charged ones easily. It addresses common concerns such as range anxiety and the inconvenience of daily recharging. If implemented effectively, this technology could significantly enhance user experience and reduce the initial cost of the scooter if batteries are sold separately.
The e:Swap system is already being tested in Bengaluru for commercial three-wheelers through a joint venture between Honda and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation. Battery swapping has proven successful in other markets like Taiwan, suggesting it could work well in India despite potential challenges.
Second Electric Scooter on the Horizon
In addition to the Activa EV, Honda is also planning another electric scooter for the Indian market. While details are sparse, it's clear that Honda aims to establish a strong presence in India's growing EV sector.
The brand's reputation and innovative technologies like e:Swap could make these scooters highly competitive against rivals such as Ather Rizta, Ola S1 X+, Bajaj Chetak, Hero Vida, and TVS iQube.
The anticipated starting price for the Activa EV is around Rs 1 lakh. This pricing strategy aims to make it accessible while offering advanced features that justify its cost. With these plans, Honda is poised to make a significant impact on India's electric two-wheeler market.
As Honda prepares to launch its first electric scooter in India by March 2025, it marks an important step in their EV journey. The combination of advanced features and innovative battery swapping technology positions them well to capture market share and meet evolving consumer demands.
