Setting New Safety Standards: ARAI's Crash Tests For Electric Two-Wheelers
The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has recently completed three crash tests on electric scooters. This test series, conducted in Pune, is a major step towards potentially setting safety standards for electric two-wheelers in India.
It's noteworthy because there are no compulsory crash testing norms for two-wheelers globally yet. ARAI performed these tests for some customers but didn't name them due to privacy agreements.

These tests used a rigid barrier and a side pole, with accelerometers and high-speed cameras capturing the crash data in detail. This action hints at a possible future where electric two-wheeler crash testing might become mandatory in India. Such a move is expected to enhance safety standards in a rapidly expanding market sector.
This initiative comes as the Indian electric two-wheeler industry focuses on improving safety standards. This focus intensified after several fire incidents involving electric scooters made headlines, prompting serious safety concerns.
In response, the Indian government introduced stricter battery safety norms. These norms have weeded out many manufacturers that relied on low-quality batteries and components.
A report from Bain & Company and Blume Ventures predicts significant growth in the electric two-wheeler market. By 2030, market penetration could jump from about 5% to around 45%.
This growth depends on Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) developing mid-segment scooters and launching innovative entry-level motorcycles. However, for this expansion to happen, improving public perceptions of safety is crucial.
DriveSpark Thinks
Though some EV manufacturers in India continue to push the boundaries of safety standards in EVs and the EV industry, some EV manufacturers try to explore the gaps in Indian safety standards to produce more affordable models.
As such, the push for electric two-wheeler safety standards reflects the industry's commitment to enhancing vehicle reliability and passenger security. As India's electric two-wheeler market continues to grow, these safety measures will play a vital role in shaping its future.
