Ducati V2 Engine Revealed: The World's Lightest Twin Cylinder With Two Different Power Outputs

For all the Ducatisti's, there's some exciting news! The Italian motorcycle powerhouse has introduced its lightest-ever twin-cylinder engine, the V2, weighing in at a mere 54.4 kg.

This new addition to Ducati's lineup of engines not only maintains the iconic 90° V-twin layout but also introduces a plethora of features designed to maximize performance, reliability, and riding pleasure.

Ducati V2 Specifications and Design

Ducati's latest V2 engine comes in two power configurations: a 120 hp version, capable of reaching 126 hp with a racing exhaust, and a 115 hp version with reinforced components.

Both versions share an impressive displacement of 890 cc, paired with a bore and stroke of 96 x 61.5 mm. Torque delivery remains robust, with the 120 hp variant hitting 93.3 Nm and the 115 hp variant reaching 92.1 Nm, both at 8,250 rpm.

This V2 engine meets Euro 5+ emission standards, making it environmentally compliant without compromising power. Weighing 9 kg less than its predecessor, the Superquadro 955, and 5.9 kg less than the Testastretta Evoluzione, the V2's reduction in mass translates to a more agile and responsive riding experience.

Technology At The Forefront

At the heart of this new engine lies Ducati's IVT (Intake Variable Timing) system, allowing for a linear torque curve across all rev ranges. By adjusting the intake valve timing over a 52° arc, the IVT system provides seamless throttle response and sportbike-level performance at high revs.

With more than 70% of maximum torque available from as low as 3,000 rpm, the V2 delivers strong acceleration with smooth power delivery.

Ducati has also incorporated DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) treatment on the rocker arms, which enhances efficiency and durability. Hollow-stem intake valves reduce weight by 5%, further contributing to the engine's lightweight build. For riders, this translates to extended intervals between valve clearance checks, now required only every 30,000 km.

What Has It Been Designed For?

Engineered for adaptability, the V2 is optimized for various riding conditions and preferences. The 115 hp version, for example, is designed with a reinforced alternator and shorter gear ratios in first and second gears, ideal for tackling inclines or carrying heavier loads.

Ducati has also integrated a quick-shifter, the DQS 2.0, for smoother, gearless shifting and an anti-hopping multi-disc wet clutch to ensure confidence during aggressive downshifting.

The engine's design promotes natural balance, as the 90° V-twin layout minimizes vibrations without needing additional counterweights. This layout, paired with the lightened aluminum cylinder liners, enhances agility and contributes to a more compact bike design.

A Lot Going On In A Small Package

To achieve the V2's compact dimensions, Ducati introduced a water/oil heat exchanger positioned within the cylinder which eliminates the need for an oil cooler, reducing weight and simplifying the bike's appearance.

By positioning the water pump on the head of the front cylinder, Ducati minimizes the exposed rubber tubing, which both optimizes the cooling system and enhances the engine's aesthetic appeal.

Reliability and Maintenance-Friendly

A knock sensor allows the V2 to adapt to varying fuel qualities, ensuring reliability even in locations where high-octane fuel might not be available.

Riders can also opt for a reduced-power version of the engine, suitable for A2 license holders, making Ducati's performance accessible to a broader audience.

Ducati has taken rider convenience into account by scheduling oil changes at 15,000 km and valve clearance checks at 30,000 km, making the V2 relatively low-maintenance for high-performance motorcycles.

This V2 engine marks a new chapter in Ducati's legacy, offering the best of Italian engineering with a focus on performance, efficiency, and aesthetic appeal. The new engine uses modern tech and traditional skill to stand out in a world full of new advancements, further enhancing the appeal and dedication of Ducati.
