BMW R20 Concept Revealed At Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este - Bavaria's Biggest Two-Wheeled Boxer
BMW Motorrad has revealed the R20 concept at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on the shores of Lake Como, Italy. The BMW R20 Concept sports the largest boxer engine ever fitted to a BMW motorcycle.
BMW wants you to focus on the "highest craftsmanship levels" of its latest "design masterpiece" which it claims presents itself as "the epitome of expressive and cool design, refined down to the last detail". But ours as well as everyone else's attention is on a different detail - the engine.

As stated before, the R20 Concept sports the largest boxer engine ever fitted to a BMW motorcycle, an air and oil-cooled 2.0-litre flat twin, which is around 200cc larger than the one fitted to the present-day R18 road bike.
BMW has fitted the new 2,000cc boxer twin with new cylinder head covers, a new belt cover and a new oil cooler to help keep the oil pipes partially hidden. The engine's exact outputs are not known but expect it to make a lot more than the 90bhp and 158Nm figures of the R18.

The BMW R20 Concept looks to have been built around its oversized engine with the sporty roadster-style bike's black double-loop main frame made of chrome-molybdenum steel tubes forming its backbone.
This frame is suspended by fully adjustable Ohlins Blackline suspension elements at the front and rear. The R20 also sports BMW's Paralever setup in a new two-lever guise - the swingarm is made of chrome-molybdenum steel and the Paralever strut is made of aluminium.

Compared to the R18, the R20 features a much more sportier riding setup. The R20 is 249mm shorter than the R18 in length and features a much sharper steering angle of 62.5 degrees. The R20 also features a much shorter swingarm.
The wheel and tyre combo does show off the sportier outlook of the R20 Concept. The front wheel is a 17-inch spoked unit shod with a 120/70 tyre. The rear wheel, on the other hand, is a disc wheel clad in 200/55 rubber.

Braking duties on the R20 concept are handled by disc brakes on both ends. The twin discs at the front are clamped down by radially mounted six-piston callipers while the single disc at the rear sports four-piston callipers to bring the R20 to a stop.
The minimal bodywork that can be seen (ie: the fuel tank) has been painted in a shade dubbed "hotter than pink" from the 1970s. The cylinder head covers, belt cover and air intake funnels are made of polished and anodized aluminium while the Paralever strut, footrest system and brake callipers are finished in gunmetal.

Thoughts About The BMW R20 Concept
The BMW R20 Concept is a sporty roadster that has been built around its most important part, the massive 2.0-litre boxer twin engine. And while the R20 is a concept, Motorrad is known for bringing concepts into production, unlike its four-wheeled sibling.
