Traffic Incoming! Hebbal Flyover's Up-Ramp In Bengaluru Closed To Vehicles Except Two-Wheelers
Starting Wednesday (17 April, 2024), Bengaluru's Hebbal flyover up-ramp, a crucial connector for vehicles traveling from Nagawara and K R Puram to the city's core, will see a significant change. Only two-wheelers will be permitted to use this ramp due to construction activities by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA). This development is part of BDA's project to enhance the flyover by constructing two separate lanes.
The construction involves dismantling two spans of the existing ramp and reducing some road space near where the KR Puram upramp merges with the main lanes. To facilitate this transition smoothly, BDA is installing new crash barriers. The adjustments are aimed at creating additional tracks to improve traffic flow.

In light of these changes, the Bengaluru Traffic Police have advised motorists to seek alternative routes. Vehicles from Nagawara heading towards Mehkri Circle will now need to navigate under the flyover, make a right at Hebbal Circle, travel north for a bit, and then take a U-turn before the Kodigehalli signal. This detour allows them to access the service road and rejoin the Hebbal flyover loop towards downtown.
For travelers from KR Puram to the city, alternative routes include the IOC-Mukunda Theatre Road, Lingarajapuram flyover, and Nagawara-Tannery Road. Those coming from Hegde Nagar and Thanisandra can use the GKVK-Jakkur Road to reach the Hebbal flyover.
Vehicles bound for Yeshwanthpur from KR Puram should travel below the flyover and proceed via BEL Circle and Sadashivanagar Police Station Junction. Airport-goers from Hennur, HRBR Layout, Banaswadi, KR Puram, and KG Halli are advised to use the Hennur-Bagalur Road.
The need for these changes stems from Bengaluru's growing vehicle population, which, as per M N Anucheth, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), stands at about 1.16 crore registered vehicles.
With 50 to 60 lakh vehicles on the streets during peak hours, the city, which holds the title for the highest number of private vehicles in India, faces severe congestion challenges. Anucheth emphasized the focus on traffic management rather than enforcement to alleviate these issues.
As part of the city's traffic management strategy, the Bengaluru Traffic Police, in collaboration with the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), is rolling out 28 adaptive signals.
Additionally, 165 COSICOST AI signals developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) are set to be introduced, aiming to optimize signal timings over the next six to eight months.

Hebbal is one of the busiest junctions in Bangalore, connecting the Outer Ring Road and Airport Road to the main city. With the up-ramp from Nagavara to Bellary Road closed, coupled with the new bottleneck right after the Manyata Flyover, the traffic on Ring Road is going to exponentially increase. This is going to be a challenege for most comuters, but we can expect traffic to come down below normal once the construction completes.
