Bajaj Chetak Electric Scooter Hits New Sales Record In India

The Bajaj Chetak electric scooter has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 2 lakh unit sales in India. This achievement was marked by its highest monthly sales of 16,691 units in June 2024. The first 1 lakh units took four years to sell, but the next lakh was sold within just eight months.

Bajaj Chetak's Market Position

In FY2024, Bajaj Chetak sold 1,15,627 units, outpacing Ather Energy by 7,733 units but trailing TVS Motor Co by 74,269 units. Bajaj Auto is currently second in the electric two-wheeler market, with Ola Electric leading the retail front. In the first quarter of FY2025, Bajaj sold 40,854 Chetaks, a 96 per cent year-on-year increase.

Initially launched just before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chetak faced slow sales due to limited availability in Pune and Bengaluru through KTM showrooms. The first 15 months saw only 1,587 units sold. However, sales picked up significantly in FY2024.

Variants and Pricing

Bajaj Auto revamped the Chetak lineup with three variants: the base model 2901 priced at Rs 95,998, the mid-tier Urbane at Rs 1.23 lakh, and the top-end Premium variant at Rs 1.47 lakh. This overhaul has contributed to increased demand and sales.

The company plans to expand its dealer network from the current 164 cities and 200 touchpoints to approximately 600 showrooms within three to four months. This expansion aims to meet growing demand and improve accessibility for customers.

Sales Performance

According to Vahan data, Bajaj Auto sold 66,512 Chetaks between January and June 2024. This performance has helped maintain its No.3 ranking in retail sales after Ola Electric and TVS Motor Co., giving it a market share of 13 per cent compared to 5.51 per cent in H1 2023.

The increased production capacity and expanding dealer network have significantly boosted Chetak's market presence. The last one lakh units were sold between November 2023 and June 2024 alone.

Bajaj Auto's strong start in FY2025 indicates a promising future for the Chetak electric scooter. With continued expansion of its dealer network and sustained demand growth, Bajaj aims to close the gap with competitors like TVS iQube.
