Ather Energy To Launch Zenith & EL Platforms For Electric Vehicles

Ather Energy is gearing up to introduce two new electric two-wheeler platforms: the Zenith for motorcycles and EL for scooters. The Zenith platform will cater to electric motorcycles in the 125-300cc range, while the EL platform aims to offer a cost-effective and versatile base for future e-scooters.

Scope of an Electric Ather Motorcycle

Despite India's electrification drive being led by two-wheelers, electric motorcycles have yet to gain significant traction. Brands like Tork, Revolt, and Ultraviolette have limited offerings. Ather Energy sees a substantial opportunity in this segment, with motorcycles making up about 63 percent of the market volume. The company anticipates EV penetration in this space to reach 10 percent by the end of this decade.

Currently, Ather offers two electric scooter models – the 450 and the Rizta – with seven variants based on a single platform. The new EL platform is in advanced development stages and will feature a new powertrain, electronics, and chassis while incorporating elements from the existing Ather 450 platform.

New EL Platform to Expand Ather's Scooter Range

The EL platform will enable Ather to develop various scooter models tailored for both domestic and international markets. "The EL platform will allow us to develop a diverse range of scooter models tailored to various domestic and international market needs, and reduce our costs," noted the company. However, Ather has not disclosed when these new platforms will launch.

Production of models based on these platforms will commence at Ather's upcoming facility in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. This facility is set to start operations in phases from May 2026. Currently, Ather operates two manufacturing units in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, with a combined annual capacity of 4.2 lakh units.

Ola Electric's Plans

Ola Electric, India's largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer, is also working on four electric motorcycle models. The company plans to launch its first electric motorcycle in the first half of FY26 and aims to expand into the mass-market motorcycle segment over time.

Ather Energy sold 1.10 lakh electric two-wheelers during FY24, an increase from 92,093 units sold in FY23. This growth reflects the rising demand for electric vehicles in India as more consumers shift towards sustainable transportation options.

The introduction of these new platforms signifies Ather's commitment to expanding its product lineup and addressing diverse market needs. By leveraging advanced technology and innovative designs, Ather aims to strengthen its position in both the domestic and international markets.
