Ather Energy Expands Internationally By Opening First Showroom In Sri Lanka
Ather Energy, a prominent electric scooter manufacturer from Bengaluru, India, is renowned for its high-performance scooters like the Ather 450. After solidifying its position in India, Ather has begun expanding internationally. Recently, it inaugurated its first showroom in a neighbouring country, marking a significant step in its growth journey.
Bengaluru has become a hub for electric vehicle start-ups, with Ather Energy entering the scene in 2018 with its initial electric scooter. The company then launched the 450X model in early 2020. In 2021, Ather reached a pivotal moment by starting production at its Hosur facility in Tamil Nadu. This was followed by the introduction of more budget-friendly models such as the 450S and Rista.
Ather Energy has been focusing on expanding into neighbouring countries. It has already established five showrooms and sixteen fast-charging stations in Nepal. Recently, Ather extended its reach to Sri Lanka by opening its first showroom in Colombo. This expansion is part of Ather's strategy to tap into larger markets like Sri Lanka compared to Nepal.
The Sri Lankan showroom, known as "Ather Space," offers locals the opportunity to test ride and purchase Ather scooters. Currently, only the Ather 450X model is available for sale there. Evolution Auto, a joint venture between Sensoy Capital Partners and Sino Lanka, assisted Ather in setting up this showroom.
Evolution Auto will serve as Ather's distributor in Sri Lanka but will not directly manage sales or services. Its main responsibility is to establish Ather Grid fast-charging stations across the country. This collaboration allows Ather to concentrate on selling and servicing its scooters while Evolution Auto handles infrastructure development.
In Nepal, where the electric vehicle market is still developing, Ather has managed to open five showrooms within a year since entering in 2023. Although Nepal is not a major market for EVs yet, this expansion demonstrates Ather's commitment to growing its presence in South Asia.
Challenges and Opportunities
The availability of fast-charging facilities is crucial for boosting consumer confidence in electric scooters like those from Ather. However, creating a comprehensive charging network across Sri Lanka presents challenges. By partnering with Evolution Auto, Ather can focus on enhancing sales and service operations while ensuring charging infrastructure is developed efficiently.
This strategic move into Sri Lanka signifies Ather's ambition to capture larger markets beyond India. With plans to open more showrooms soon, Ather aims to strengthen its foothold in the region. The collaboration with Evolution Auto underscores the importance of partnerships in navigating new markets and establishing essential infrastructure.
