Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 Vs KTM 390 Adventure – Price, Powertrain, Hardware & More

Royal Enfield recently commenced the deliveries of the new Himalayan 450 motorcycle in India. This new-generation Himalayan motorcycle is a lot more powerful than the model it replaces. As such, here's a quick comparison between the new Royal Enfield Himalayan and the KTM 390 Adventure.

Price

Prices for the newly launched Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle range between Rs 2.69 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 2.84 lakh (ex-showroom). However, this is just an introductory price, and the introductory price will be valid till the 31st of December only.

On the other hand, the base KTM 390 Adventure X model is priced at Rs 2.81 lakh (ex-showroom), but the higher-spec 390 Adventure is priced at Rs 3.39 lakh (ex-showroom). There is also a more expensive 2023 390 Adventure, which is priced at Rs 3.61 lakh (ex-showroom).

Design

The new-gen Royal Enfield Himalayan is a simple motorcycle with retro-ish-looking design elements. Also, the latest-gen Himalayan motorcycle's design looks more like an evolution of the previous generation model.

In comparison, the KTM 390 Adventure looks properly modern with its edgy design language and bright colours. Also, the motorcycle looks quite purposeful despite its off-road-focussed hardware bits. That being said, the 390 Adventure cannot be mistaken for anything other than a KTM.

Features

Coming to the feature list, the new-gen Himalayan is one of the best-equipped Royal Enfield motorcycles to date with features such as an all-new circular digital instrument cluster, all-LED lighting, dual-channel ABS with the ability to turn off rear ABS, Bluetooth connectivity, height-adjustable seat, traction control and much more.

On the other hand, the KTM 390 Adventure motorcycle also comes with plenty of features including a fully digital instrument cluster, all-LED lighting, dual-channel and cornering ABS, traction control, a quick shifter, adjustable front and rear suspension, and much more.

However, the more equivalently priced KTM 390 Adventure X variant comes with a lot fewer features compared to the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. However, it is still decently equipped with features such as all-LED lighting, digital instrument cluster, dual-channel ABS and more.

Powertrain

The new Royal Enfield Himalayan sports an all-new 451.65cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine. This new Sherpa 450 engine produces 39.5bhp at 8,000rpm and 40Nm of peak torque at 5,500rpm. The model also comes equipped with a 6-speed gearbox and Slip & Assist clutch.

In comparison, the new KTM 390 Adventure is powered by a 373.2cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine with 42.3bhp at 9,000rpm and 37Nm of peak torque at 7,000rpm. This engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox with Slip & Assist clutch. Higher-spec models also feature quickshifter.

Hardware

The new Himalayan uses a Twin-Spar frame, and suspension duties are carried out by open cartridge-type USD forks at the front, and a mono-shock unit at the rear. Furthermore, braking duties are handled by a 320mm disc brake unit at the front and a 270mm disc brake unit at the rear.

The KTM 390 Adventure comes with Trellis frame, and suspension duties are carried out by adjustable WP USD forks at the front, and a WP mono-shock unit at the rear. Also, braking is handled by a 320mm disc brake and a 230mm disc brake at the front and rear, respectively.

Thoughts About The KTM 390 Adventure & Royal Enfield Himalayan 450

The KTM 390 Adventure X is the base-spec version and it misses out on a few features to keep the price tag aggressive. On the other hand, higher-spec 390 Adventure motorcycles feature a lot more tech than the new Himalayan, however, they are also a lot more expensive as well.

As such, we expect the aggressive pricing of the new Himalayan motorcycle to play a huge part in its success. Also, the model comes very well-equipped for its current introductory pricing.
