Ducati Superquadro Mono: The World's Most Powerful & Highest Revving Single-Cylinder Engine

Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati has returned to the world of single-cylinder engines after a three-decade hiatus with the all-new Superquadro Mono engine.

The high-performance Ducati Superquadro Mono single-cylinder engine is touted as the highest-revving and most powerful road-going single-cylinder ever produced.

The Superquadro Mono engine boasts a displacement of 659cc, delivering a substantial 76.4bhp in its standard form and an impressive 83.4bhp when track-ready. The engine revs up to an astonishing 10,250rpm, setting a new benchmark for single-cylinder engines.

The torque delivery of the Superquadro Mono engine is equally impressive. Ducati has optimized the cam profile, throttle body diameter, intake duct length, and exhaust pipe design to ensure a robust torque curve.

The Superquadro Mono engine generates a peak torque of 62Nm at 8000rpm, with 70% of that torque accessible as early as 3000rpm and 80% available from 4250rpm to the redline.

One of the standout features of this engine is its large cylinder bore - the largest of any production single. The 116mm piston is borrowed from Ducati's powerful 1285cc V-twin 'Superquadro' engine, which powers the renowned 1299 Panigale.

With a stroke that is just 1.6mm longer than the 1299 Panigale, the Superquadro Mono engine achieves oversquare dimensions, allowing the piston to travel at a remarkable 21 meters per second at maximum rpm.

Ducati has integrated twin balancers into the engine design, aligning them with the crankshaft to minimize vibrations. The diecast crankcases encompass a water jacket around an aluminium cylinder liner, eliminating the need for a separate cylinder block.

While the Superquadro Mono shares valves, combustion chamber, and desmo timing control with the Panigale 1299, about 80% of the engine components are entirely new.

Ducati's commitment to creating a lightweight, compact engine is evident in the Superquadro Mono's design. Every gram has been carefully considered. For instance, the offset con rod allows for weight savings in the crankshaft bearings - a larger main bearing is used on the stressed side, with a smaller one on the opposite side.

Thoughts About The Ducati Superquadro Mono

The Superquadro Mono is a testament to Ducati's innovative spirit and commitment to performance. This revolutionary single-cylinder engine rekindles Ducati's legacy while setting a new standard for future production models.

Specific motorcycles that will be powered by the Superquadro Mono engine have not yet been officially revealed by Ducati. However, rumours and test mules spied by the automotive paparazzi, suggest it might first be seen in a motard-style motorcycle.
