BMW Unveils Retro-Inspired R 12 & R 12 NineT - Boxer Twins For The Win

BMW Motorrad has unveiled two new additions to its motorcycle lineup, the R 12 and R 12 nineT. These models are the brand's latest retro motorcycles with the R 12 a cruiser and the R 12 nineT being a neo-retro roadster.

The R 12 is a middleweight cruiser that sits below BMW Motorrad's larger R 18 offering. The BMW R 12 is powered by an air/oil-cooled, 1,170cc, horizontally opposed, boxer twin engine that delivers 94bhp at 6,500rpm and 110Nm of peak torque at 6,000rpm.

In contrast, the R 12 nineT is a neo-retro roadster that inherits the DNA of the R nineT but comes with significant updates. It uses the same 1,170cc boxer twin engine that pushes out 107bhp, arriving at 7,000rpm. The peak torque figure stands at 115Nm.

Both bikes share the same 1,170cc air/oil-cooled boxer twin engine, albeit in different states of tune. The R 12 nineT model is lighter by 1kg and now weighs 220kg with its 16-litre fuel tank filled. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox and shaft-driven setup that transfers power to the rear wheel.

Discussing the new releases, Head of BMW Motorrad, Dr Markus Schramm, said, "With the new R 12 and R 12 nineT, we are consistently continuing our Heritage world of experience. Both models appeal to different target groups and thus contribute to a successful future for BMW Motorrad in a highly attractive segment."

The R 12 offers two riding modes - Roll and Rock, while its sibling, the R 12 nineT, comes with three modes - Rain, Road, and Dynamic. Cornering ABS and traction control are standard features on both models.

The bikes also differ in terms of suspension. The R 12 employs a non-adjustable 45mm USD front fork and a monoshock and paralever swingarm at the rear, while the R 12 nineT features a fully adjustable 45mm USD front fork.

Braking duties are handled by twin 310mm floating disc brakes at the front that are clamped down by 4-piston monobloc fixed callipers. The rear brake is a 265mm disc with 2-piston floating callipers.
