Yamaha Is Developing Power Steering For Motorcycles: Currently Being Tested On Dirt Bikes
Yamaha is developing a new type of electric power steering system for motorcycles. The new power steering system is currently being tested on dirt bikes.

Though power steering is a very common feature in modern cars, the feature is not used in motorcycles.

However, similar systems without any torque assistance are available in motorcycles to control various disturbances on the handlebar, a system with toque assistance that adjusts according to steering inputs is a relatively new concept on motorcycles.

The new power steering system for motorcycles by Yamaha is officially called the Yamaha EPS Steering Support System.

This all-new steering assistance system for motorcycles developed by Yamaha consists of an electromagnetic set-up that uses active steering damping technology.

The Yamaha EPS Steering Support System provides steering assistance at low speeds using an actuator, while the newly developed system acts as an electronic steering damper at high speeds to aid the stability of the motorcycle.

Much like the power steering system in cars, the Yamaha EPS Steering Support System uses a torque sensor to identify and measure handlebar inputs and adjust the assistance accordingly.

Though Honda also uses similar technology on their motorcycles, the system is currently used as a damper which is controlled by the ECU of the motorcycle. The Yamaha EPS Steering Support System on the other hand adds an actuator and a torque sensor to measure and assist inputs from the rider through the handlebar of the motorcycle.

As mentioned earlier, the Yamaha EPS Steering Support System is now being tested on dirt bikes. In addition to that, the new system is being tested by Mr Jay Wilson (an Australian motocross rider who rides for All-Japan Yamaha Factory Race Team at the All-Japan Motocross championship).

Moreover, the system is currently being assessed by Jay Wilson by using the system on his Yamaha YZ450FM and Yamaha YZ250F dirt bikes.

Thoughts About The Yamaha EPS Steering Support System
Yamaha's new power steering system could be a game-changing technology in the motorcycle industry, as the system could make motorcycling a lot more easier and safer.

In addition to that, the system could be a lot more beneficial in touring motorcycles and adventure motorcycles as the system could dampen sharp jolts and kickbacks through the handlebar, thus ensuring a more comfortable ride and reduced rider fatigue over long distances.

Moreover, Yamaha's new power steering system is designed to be compact with an eye to install the system on a variety of motorcycles.
