Two-Wheeler Sales Report (May 2022) - Y-o-Y Numbers Up By Nearly 198%
The Indian two-wheeler market grew by 197.66 per cent Y-o-Y in May 2022. A total of 12,22,994 two-wheelers found new homes in the fifth month of 2022.
The Indian two-wheeler market grew by 197.66 per cent Y-o-Y in May as a total of 12,22,994 two-wheelers found new homes in the fifth month of 2022.
The massive growth in Year-over-Year sales numbers for May can be attributed to the Covid pandemic ravaging the nation last year. Last year, only 4,10,871 two-wheelers found new homes in the month of May. Year-over-Year sales grew by a total of 8,12,123 units in May 2022.

Month-over-Month sales metrics also grew slightly compared to April 2022. Two-wheeler sales in India grew by 2.38 per cent (28,474 units) compared to April 2022, when a total of 11,94,520 units were sold in the country.
Leading the pack as usual was Hero Motocorp, with the world's largest two-wheeler manufacturer selling a total of 4,59,245 units in May 2022. This was up by 138.08 per cent (2,66,348 units) compared to the same month last year, when Hero sold 1,92,897 units in the domestic market. Hero's Month-over-Month numbers were also in the black, growing by 11.81 per cent (48,523 units) compared to April 2022's 4,10,722 units.
In second place was Japanese giant Honda, best known for its Activa line of scooters in India. Honda sold a total of 2,91,535 units in India in May 2022, which was up by 272.05 per cent (2,13,175 units) Y-o-Y. In May 2021, Honda sold only 78,360 two-wheelers in India. Honda's M-o-M numbers though, were down ever so slightly by 1.08 per cent (3,185 units) when the Japanese automaker sold 2,94,720 two-wheelers in India.
Rounding up the Podium was TVS with the Chennai-based two-wheeler manufacturer selling 1,69,621 units in May 2022. The Y-o-Y sales numbers for TVS were up by 194.18 per cent (1,11,962 units) compared to May 2021, when TVS sold only 57,659 units. However, M-o-M metrics were in the red for TVS, with numbers dropping by 5.85 per cent (10,538 units) when compared to April 2022's 1,80,159 units.
Bajaj was the last of the automaker's to hit six figures last month with the Pune based automaker selling a total of 1,23,083 units in May 2022 which was a Y-o-Y growth of 170.17 per cent (77,526 units) over the same period last year. M-o-M numbers were also up by 2.24 per cent (2,694 units) compared to April 2022 when it sold 1,20,389 units.
Yamaha rounded off the top 5 pipping Royal Enfield to the spot. The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer sold a total of 46,055 units in May 2022 which was up by 401.36 per cent (36,869 units) compared to May 2021's 9,186 units. Yamaha's M-o-M numbers were also up by 11.45 per cent (4,732 units) compared to April 2022 when it sold a total of 41,323 two-wheelers in India.
Royal Enfield sold a total of 45,671 units in May 2022, with Y-o-Y numbers up by 204.94 per cent (30,694 units) compared to the same period last year, when it sold 14,977 motorcycles. M-o-M sales were down by 2.94 per cent (1,381 units) compared to April's 47,052 units.
Out of the electric two-wheeler manufacturers in the country, it was Okinawa Autotech that topped the numbers with the EV maker selling 9,303 e-scooters in May. Ola was second in the EV maker list selling 9,225 units in May 2022. Ampere was the third best of the EV lot selling 5,836 units in May 2022.
Thoughts On Two-Wheeler Sales In May 2022
Two-wheeler sales in India continue to rise post the ravages of the pandemic with numbers rising by 197.66 per cent compared to May 2022. With people returning to work, two-wheeler numbers will continue to hopefully grow in the coming months.
