Turbocharged TVS Apache RR 310 Debuts In Drag Racing: All You Need To Know About TVS Racing’s Latest Weapon
TVS Racing has debuted its first dragster. It is based on the Apache RR 310 but features a host of changes that make it look, sound, and perform like it is purpose-built for drag racing. The motorcycle made its debut run at the 10th edition of The Valley Run and set the fastest times in its class. It is also the first turbocharged motorcycle ever fielded by TVS Racing in any form of motorsport.
TVS Racing is one of the best motorsport outfits to ever come out of India. Earlier this year, the brand celebrated 40 years of TVS Racing's existence. It is safe to say, the brand has come a long way from its humble but fast beginnings. The first TVS Racing machine was a 50cc two-stroke moped that was tuned enough to clock a top speed of 105km/h way back in 1982!
Over the next few decades, TVS Racing would go on to score victories that almost feel countless. The real prowess of TVS Racing's engineers is seen in the fact that TVS Racing clocked race wins across a plethora of racing categories. TVS Racing motorcycles were dominating racetracks as well as rally stages.
The best part about all of this was that the winning motorcycles were based on production machines that the public could get their hands on. TVS Racing has thereby been living the "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" motorsport saying, for four decades now.
Quite obviously then, TVS Racing is quite used to taking a bare basics machine and pushing it over its limits. What the outfit has done now with the Apache RR 310 is the perfect example of what the brand is capable of doing.
The TVS Apache RR 310 is nowhere close to being a bare basics machine. In fact, it has been the flagship motorcycle from TVS Motor Company for a few years now. It is equipped with a full-colour LCD screen, multiple ride modes, LED lighting, etc. It is powered by a reverse-inclined, liquid-cooled, 312.2cc, single-cylinder engine that puts out 33.53bhp at 9,700rpm and 27.3Nm at 7,700rpm.
As aforementioned, it is not a bare basics motorcycle. However, it does seem like a bare basics machine when compared to the purpose-built race motorcycles based on it. TVS Racing first brought out the race-spec ARRC RR 310 for the one-make championship that runs alongside the Asia Road Racing Championship. This motorcycle cross the 200km/h mark.
If that wasn't enough, TVS Racing has now scored a hit out of the ball park. Meet the new TVS Apache RR 310 Dragster. With this motorcycle, TVS Racing has set a new benchmark for technology. For the first time, TVS Racing has used a turbocharger on one of its race motorcycles.
It is an electronically-controlled turbocharger that force feeds compressed air into the single-cylinder engine. The engine capacity however, remains unchanged at 312.2cc. Other engine modifications include a forged piston, a titanium connecting rod and titanium valves to handle the extra compression in the engine.
As it turns out, this is only the beginning when it comes to modifications. The motorcycle was equipped with a programmable closed-loop Fi system that allows a greater degree of tuning freedom. This has also allowed TVS Racing to incorporate launch control on the motorcycle. That's right, launch control on the TVS Apache RR 310.
In addition, TVS Racing has incorporated carbon fibre bodywork, making the motorcycle very light. Even the sub-frame and wheels are made of carbon-fibre. It is also lowered for a lower centre of gravity. Finally, the extended swingarm allows for the motorcycle to accelerate faster in a straight line without losing stability and this also prevents the front wheel from lifting to a large extent.
TVS Racing hasn't revealed any figures, but a statement put out by the brand says it produces almost twice as much power as the street bike. The standard RR 310 puts out 33.5bhp, so it is safe to assume that this turbocharged dragster is pushing out close to 70bhp!.
TVS Racing also says the bike is 37 percent lighter than the stock bike. The standard motorcycle weighs in at 174 kilograms, so this motorcycle should be weighing in at around 110 kilograms. That, is extremely light indeed.
Little surprise then, that the TVS Apache RR 310 dragster clocked the fastest times in its category at The Valley Run 2022. TVS Racing participated in the Indian Open Unrestricted Class (Up To 390cc) with its new weapon. This motorcycle set the new record in this class, with Jagan Kumar setting clocking 11.523 seconds on the quarter mile. Team mate KY Ahamed clocked 11.996 seconds.
Thoughts On Turbocharged TVS Apache RR 310 Breaking Cover & Dominating Category
TVS Racing has proved its mettle time and again. Every single motorcycle it has placed on the start line has been victorious. The fact that TVS Racing's first turbocharged motorcycle has dominated its category, goes to show that TVS Racing is exploring something big here. This could be the beginning of more dominating times for the Indian racing outfit.
