In yet another incident of electric scooters catching fire, an Okinawa i-Praise+ spontaneously combusted in the city of Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

The incident occurred when the owner, a 29-year-old man by the name of Satheesh was riding his Okinawa i-Praise+ in Zuzuvadi, a neighbourhood on the outskirts of Hosur. Satheesh who works in the city of Bangalore, Karnataka was riding his electric scooter back to India's tech hub when it spontaneously ignited.
Satheesh managed to jump off his burning electric scooter. With the help of a few friendly locals, the owner managed to quench the fire but it was too late as the blaze had left his scooter gutted. Satheesh, had purchased his electric scooter a year ago and had been riding it ever since.
This news from Hosur in Tamil Nadu once again shines an unwelcome spotlight on electric scooters in India. Over the past few weeks, cases of electric scooters catching fire across the country have been on the rise. These cases have resulted in multiple electric scooters spontaneously combusting and have even resulted in the unfortunate death of three individuals.
While the actual cause of these fires is unknown, the current heatwave sweeping across the country sure must be playing an important role with temperatures in some areas of the country hitting the high forties.
This is not the first time an Okinawa scooter has gone up in flames. Just over a month ago, an Okinawa scooter went up in flames in Vellore in northern Tamil Nadu state. The vehicle had caught fire when it was charging at around 1 A.M. when its owner and his minor daughter were fast asleep. Both were killed in a fire that has been attributed to a short circuit caused by an old socket.
Okinawa is one of many electric two-wheeler manufacturers who have issued voluntary recalls for their e-scooters to check these vehicles for any issues that may cause them to catch fire. In total, over 7,000 electric two-wheelers from companies like Okinawa, Ola Electric, Pure EV and other EV makers have been recalled as a precautionary measure by their manufacturers.
Thoughts On The Latest Electric Scooter Fire Incident
This latest incident comes from the city of Hosur and shows yet another instance of something that is unfortunately becoming a common sight across the country - an electric scooter catching fire. Thankfully, the owner was able to escape unhurt, which is not something we can say about the electric scooter which was ravaged by the fire. Cases of electric scooters catching fire are on the rise and we hope that manufacturers will take the matter seriously to ensure they do not occur in the future. People have lost their lives to these fires, which is totally unacceptable.
