Norton Electric Motorcycle Under Development In Partnership With Six Other Brands & The Govt
Norton Motorcycles has started the development of an electric motorcycle in partnership with the government and a few other firms thanks to a special government scheme. The project is called Zero Emission Norton and is partially funded by the UK Government's Advanced Propulsion Centre. The Indian market too might end up benefiting from Norton's new project.
Norton is one of the most well-known motorcycle manufacturers in the world. The brand has in the past manufactured lots of interesting motorcycles and continues to do even now. In a recent development, TVS Motor Company ended up purchasing the brand, and this gave the brand a fresh breath of life.
Given that the world is headed toward electric mobility, it is quite apparent that all motorcycle manufacturers would eventually have to include an electric model if not completely switch to electric. As a result, there is a sudden rush to develop and launch electric motorcycles. However, it is an expensive and resource-consuming affair and it always pays to have partnerships.
Norton Motorcycles now seems to have found the right partner. The Advanced Propulsion Centre is an arm of the UK government that has always promoted the development and usage of electric vehicles with an aim to see a zero-pollution automotive industry in the UK.
Norton seems to be the perfect motorcycle manufacturer for the job. However, the project will not be limited to the motorcycle alone. Instead, the project will also include six other brands that will partner with Norton. These brands will each develop specific components for the upcoming motorcycle, thereby gaining further expertise in the area of EV development.
While Norton will be the brand that designs, develops, and puts the bike together, the other partners will develop a few specific components. Delta Cosworth will be involved in the design and development of the battery pack. HiSpeed will develop and manufacture the electric motor and inverter.
Formaplex will bring in its expertise in terms of the manufacturing of precision components. M&I materials will work on the cooling system while INDRA will take care of the charging. Warwick Engineering Group from the University of Warwick will work on battery technology, modeling, and toolchain development.
The University of Warwick is also involved in the development of the Triumph TE-1 electric motorcycle and brings with it significant expertise to the Zero Emission Norton project. The project will run for a duration of around 30 months and by the end of this time period, we should be able to see an electric motorcycle prototype.
Given that TVS Motor Company now owns Norton, some of the technologies developed as a part of this project could eventually make their way to the Indian market as well. For all we know, the Norton electric motorcycle could become the first electric superbike to be launched in India.
Thoughts On Norton Electric Motorcycle Being Developed
The promise of an electric vehicle is very easy to see and it is also easy to see why brands are diving straight into the EV space. The Norton electric motorcycle might just become of the best electric superbikes in the world given the kid of brands that are involved in its development.
