Indian Army’s Ashok Leyland Stallion Rescues Maruti Suzuki Gypsy Stranded In The River Sindh

The Indian Army recently engaged in a rescue operation. This operation though didn't really make the headlines because it wasn't a natural calamity. Instead, it was the over-ambitiousness of a few tourists that caused them and their Maruti Suzuki Gypsy to get stranded in the Sindh river.

Tourism in India is reaching new levels of growth post the pandemic. This is especially seen in the Himalayas where some reports claim that certain sectors are seeing four times the normal number of tourists. With an increase in the number of tourists comes an increase in tomfoolery. This incident is a perfect example of the same.

A few tourists tried to cross the Sindh river in their Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, but got stuck more than halfway through, where the water was too deep. It is not known whether the engine stalled or whether there was an obstacle that stopped the SUV from moving forward. The position of the Gypsy in the video certainly depicts a large boulder or rock under the water.

It is quite clear that the Gypsy is not moving anywhere, anytime soon. The Indian Army then came to the rescue of those in the Gypsy. An Indian Army Ashok Leyland Stallion with an integrated crane arm was driven into the river. The crane arm was then used to rescue the occupants of the Gypsy.

We're unsure if the Gypsy itself was also rescued, or if the Gypsy was left there for a private crane to rescue later. The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is one of the most capable off-road vehicles in India. It was based on the second-generation Suzuki Jimny and was produced in India between 1985 and 2018.

Though it was first launched with a 1.0-litre engine, later versions were upgraded with a 1.3-litre four-cylinder, fuel-injected engine. It is paired with a five-speed gearbox and gets proper 4WD with low-ratio. Despite being known for its ability to conquer all sorts of off-road obstacles, it shouldn't be driven in uncharted terrain without expert off-roading skills.

The thumb rule of water-wading in unknown water bodies is always to first gauge the depth of the water first. This was quite obviously not done in this case as the flow of the Singh River is too strong, and the water is too cold. The water was definitely too deep as it can be seen flowing through the interiors of the Gypsy in the video.

Thankfully though, the Indian Army Stallion was around to come to the rescue. The stallion is the backbone for the Indian Army when it comes to logistics. The armed forces use over 60,000 of these trucks to transport troops and goods all over the country. It is a robust workhorse and offers bulletproof reliability in all situations, even if the situation involves some tourist silliness.

Thoughts On Indian Army Stallion Truck Rescuing Maruti Suzuki Gypsy

With a capable vehicle comes the temptation to do things out of the ordinary. The Gypsy is very well capable of handling quite a bit of off-roading in the right hands. However, it takes quite a lot of experience to get to that level. Until then, everyone can start off by knowing their own capabilities and their vehicle's capabilities.
