Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India started exports back in 2001 with the Honda Activa scooter. Almost 21 years later, HMSI exports around 18 different models to 29 different countries.

Speaking about the initial years, the first 16 years of export numbers for Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India stood at just 15 lakhs - Which is less than one lakh units per year on average. However, in the last 5 years, exports have sky-rocketed for Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India by achieving additional 15 lakh units.

Honda currently operates four manufacturing plants in India and exports to much bigger markets such as the United States, Europe and Japan.

Speaking on the achievement, Mr Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Director, Sales & Marketing of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India said, "In the last two decades, Honda has delighted more than 30 lac two-wheeler customers through exports. Led by Dio Scooter, we are expanding our export portfolio including both scooters & motorcycles. To establish high quality and efficiency, matching global standards, HMSI raised a dedicated Overseas Business vertical in 2021."

However, in February 2022 Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India has witnessed negative growth in the export numbers and the domestic sales numbers have also gone down significantly.

Mr Atsushi Ogata, Managing Director, President & CEO of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India also shared his thoughts and said, "Such milestones are a shining testimony of HMSI's sustained efforts in expanding Honda's footprint in global exports. Last year we flagged off our global engine production line at Vithalapur plant in Gujarat, thus strengthening our export capabilities further. As we make further inroads into developed markets, our reinstated focus on exports expansion takes HMSI one step closer to becoming a 'Manufacturing Hub for the World'."

Dissecting the numbers, exports have taken a hit as mentioned above and the situation is a little less concerning as Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India witnessed just over 13 per cent dip in export numbers as the company managed to export 26,944 units in February 2022.

Though exports numbers seem small to the naked eye, these numbers significantly contribute to the overall business and profits for Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India. In addition to that, the exports account for more than 8 per cent share in total volumes for Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India.

Speaking about Honda Motorcycles & Scooter India, the company has recently patented the design of the upcoming Honda CRF190L motorcycle. Speaking about the motorcycle, it is an entry-level adventure motorcycle in Honda's global product lineup and made its global debut in September 2021.

Powering the Honda CRF190L is the same engine that powers other Honda Motorcycles such as the Honda Hornet 2.0. The 184cc, air-cooled, single-cylinder, fuel-injected engine produces 17bhp of peak power at 8,500rpm and 16.1Nm of peak torque at 6,000rpm. This engine comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox.

Thoughts About Honda Motorcycles & Scooters Exports

Though the two-wheeler market in India is a bit stagnant at present, the export market is sure to become even bigger, and with four manufacturing plants in India, Honda will be looking forward to capitalising as much as possible.
