Ather Plans To Build Its Largest Ever Factory In India
Ather Energy has planned to build its largest-ever manufacturing plant in India to meet the growing demand for electric scooters in the country.
Ather Energy currently has two manufacturing plants in India, both of which are situated in Hosur, Tamilnadu. The first manufacturing plant of the EV startup company has an annual production capacity of 1.2 lakh units.
Moreover, the second manufacturing plant can take the annual production capacity to a total of 4 lakh units. However, the production at the second manufacturing plant of Ather Energy is yet to commence production.
For the third manufacturing plant, Ather Energy is looking for 100 acres of land and this new mega plant will have a production capacity of 15 lakh units per year. This will make the third manufacturing plant, the largest manufacturing facility of Ather electric scooters.
For setting up the third manufacturing plant, Ather Energy is already in talks with various state governments such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujrat.
Ather Energy currently retails two models in India - Ather 450, and Ather 450X. Among the two models, the Ather 450 is the base variant and it is powered by a 5.4kW electric motor with 22Nm of peak torque. Moreover, it comes with a 2.4kWh Lithium-ion battery pack.
On the other hand, the Ather 450X uses a more powerful 6kW electric motor with 26Nm of peak torque and also sports a bigger 2.9kWh Lithium-ion battery pack.
According to Ather, the base model can do 70kms on a full charge and takes just 10 minutes to add 10 kms of range while using a suitable fast charger. In comparison, the more premium Ather 450X can go up to 80kms on a full charge and takes just 10 minutes to add 15 kms of range.
Apart from that, the Ather electric scooters come loaded with features such as a large 7-inch TFT touchscreen digital instrument cluster, all-LED lighting systems, multiple ride modes, reverse mode, and many more.
Recently, Ather Energy rolled out a new OTA update for existing Ather 450 and Ather 450X users in India. This new OTA update adds a new ride mode to the electric scooter called the 'SmartEco' mode.
According to Ather Energy, 'SmartEco' mode aims to achieve a good balance between the Eco and Sport mode of the electric scooter. To ensure the desired result, the SmartEco mode is designed to sense the requirements at any given point of time by factoring in variables such as user riding style, load on the scooter, terrain, etc.
Apart from that, a power bar is displayed on the 7-inch touchscreen unit of the scooter in SmartEco mode. The power bar indicates blue when there is ample power available, but when the power bar turns red, it means less amount of power is available.
However, the new OTA update is not available to all Ather 450 and 450X electric scooter users as the update is available for those who have subscribed for the 'Ather Connect Pro' subscription plan and also downloaded the latest version of Atherstack software.
One of the advantages of using electric vehicles is that performance, user interface, and overall experience can be improved via simple OTA updates without the need to visit the service centre.
Thoughts About Ather's Upcoming Third Manufacturing Plant
Ather Energy has a very solid product in its hands and the recent demand for EVs in tier 1 and tier 2 cities in India has pushed Ather to build its third factory. Moreover, Ather's decision to build its third factory gives us a hint at the future of EVs in India.
