Electric vehicle startup ebikeGo has acquired the rights to manufacture the Velocipedo electric trike. The Velocipedo is an electric trike made by Spanish EV manufacturer Torrot and has won the prestigious Red Dot award for its striking design.
Speaking about the new development Irfan Khan, Founder and CEO of eBikeGo stated, "We are extremely happy to have acquired one of the leading international automotive companies for the manufacturing of Electric Trike Velocipedo in the Indian Market, pertaining to the requirement of Indian consumers and infrastructure. This acquisition will put the Indian EV industry on the global map. The future of mobility is electric and the post-covid world presents an opportunity for us to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility globally. With electric, digitally connected capabilities, three-wheelers will further emerge as the most preferred urban mobility paradigm around the world and will empower every consumer"
The Velocipedo electric trike was first unveiled in 2017 at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan. This three-wheeled trike will be produced by ebikeGo in three different guises. The first is a premium trike for personal transport that can accommodate two riders and features seatbelts for both occupants.
The other two versions are for commercial use with one being a three-wheeled electric taxi while the other is a goods carrier that is dubbed the Velocipedo-C. The Velocipedo-C unlike the other models only features a windshield and will require the driver to wear a helmet when on the move. The Velocipedo-C electric goods trike can carry a load of up to 70 kilogrammes.
The Velocipedo is powered by a brushless motor connected to a 10kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The electric Velocipedo trike has a range of up to 200 kilometres and can reach a top speed of 95km/h. The electric trike weighs in at 180 kilogrammes which is quite light and is due to the use of carbon fibre and kevlar for its non-deformable 'cabin'.
The electric trike also features regenerative brakes which increase the range of this EV by around 10 to 20 per cent. The Torrot Velocipedo when plugged to a 220V output can fully charge its battery pack in one and a half hours.
The Velocipedo features a truly unique design with a very angular front end and a central headlamp unit mounted low up front. The Velocipedo sports two wheels up front and a single wheel at the rear. The front section sports enough space for the rider to keep their feet planted on the floor, while the pillion rider has to make do with footpegs which are situated on either side of the rider's seat.
The new Velocipedo is a connected trike and its onboard unit can monitor performance, location, and driver behaviour. The trike will also sport a host of anti-theft and security features. All the features of the Velocipedo can be monitored using a dedicated app.
ebikeGo will produce the Velocipedo electric trike at its facility in Pune and will start deliveries to customers in September 2022.
Thoughts on ebikeGo's Acquisition of Velocipedo
The Velocipedo is a versatile electric trike and will allow ebikeGo to really push ahead into the 3-wheeler EV space in India. With its unique design, the Velocipedo sure will turn heads when it arrives in September next year.
