Meladath Auto Components was formed in 2016, and the company creates components that convert a regular petrol scooter in to an electric hybrid. The company was formed by Mr Rakesh Meladath Karunakaran with the idea of creating a solution to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles with easier consequences.

Mr Karunakaran believes that the real problem is not adoption of electric mobility solutions, but the aftermath of the adoption. The issue he says is what does one do with the existing mobility solutions that are powered by fossil fuels.

According to Economic Times Auto, the former Mahindra & Mahindra employee believes that moving to electric mobility will lead to challenges with vehicle waste management. In addition, sales of EVs with subsidies will increase vehicular density, effectively creating more traffic congestion and adding pressure on limited infrastructure.

In order to counter some of these problems, Bangalore based Meladath Auto Components have created an e-kit. The e-kit can be retro fitted on to petrol scooters, and once installed, turns the vehicle in to an electric hybrid scooter that can be run on battery power and petrol.

The e-kit can be installed on to a scooter without the need the for any modification, and takes no more than 30 minutes to install. The e-kit can also be uninstalled at any time to go back to 'factory built'.

The e-kit is universal, and can be installed on most scooters that feature 10-inch and 12-inch steel wheels. It includes a removable Lithium-ion battery that can be charged using domestic power sockets and regular power plugs, thereby making the need for charging infrastructure irrelevant.

According to Mr Karunakaran, his e-kit will have a significant impact towards a healthier environment, and can help achieve a 15 percent reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

While the e-kit is still not production ready, the product has been registered as 'Ezee Hybrid', and has received over 30 dealership interests across the country.

Meladath Auto Components is now planning to launch an electric scooter, and they company is building it with ingenious power-train components such as Brushless DC (BLDC) electric motor, BLDC Motor controller, Lithium-ion battery packs and chargers, all made in India.

Meladath Auto Components has also drawn interests of companies like Volvo Construction Equipment India, who feel that the e-kit for petrol scooters in a big step in the industry, and needs to be supported by everyone in the transportation ecosystem.

Thoughts About The E-Kit By Meladath Auto Components

This is brilliant. Most folk missed an important question, and Mr Karunakaran seems to have asked and addressed it. Congratulations to him and his team who made this possible. We're sure Meladath Auto Components will definitely come up with more e-kits for other vehicles as well.
