Kawasaki Ninja 300 Sales Going Strong; Matches That Of TVS Apache RR 310 — Here’s Why

The Kawasaki Ninja 300, despite being over six years old still continues to be a significant force in the Indian motorcycle market. Sales figures have revealed that the Kawasaki sold 174 units of the Ninja 300 in May 2019 while the more affordable and recently launched TVS Apache RR 310 sold just 175 units.

Could it be that the Ninja is performing well or the TVS Apache RR 310 is not performing well? It is a little bit of both. The Kawasaki Ninja 300 was unveiled as a replacement for the Ninja 250 way back in 2013. But prices for the Ninja 300 were way too high until last year, so the Ninja 300 barely inched forward.

The Kawasaki Ninja 300 was assembled in India using imported parts until last year, which explains the high prices. But then, Kawasaki launched the Ninja 400 in India which is not assembled using imported parts and to create a difference between the 300 and 400, Kawasaki localised production of the Ninja 300 and dropped prices by up to Rs 1 lakh.

Sales of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 immediately shot up thanks to the low prices. It is now the most affordable twin-cylinder motorcycle in the Indian market. Sales shot up by upto 8,600 percent when the sales of May 2018 and May 2019 are compared. Kawasaki sold just 2 units of the Ninja 300 in May 2018 while it sold 174 units in May 2019.

The TVS Motor Company on the other hand sold 595 units of the RR 310 in May 2018 and sales have dropped by 71 percent to 175 units in May 2019. This could primarily be attributed to the fact that the TVS Apache RR 310's update was launched on 27 May.

Word of the updated motorcycle got out in March/April and those looking forward to buy the motorcycle might have put their purchase on hold until the update was launched. They certainly make the right choice as this update is one worth waiting for.

The updated TVS Apache RR 310 comes with a race-tuned slipper clutch, an updated ECU, a redesigned visor, redesigned chain roller and heavier bar-end weights for better vibration damping. With these updates, TVS has bettered a motorcycle that was already great.

We rode the updated TVS Apache RR 310 at the Madras Motor Race Track and came away impressed. However, waiting for the update has only result in TVS' sales dwindling. The Apache RR 310's sales should grow by a large margin in the month of June.

Thoughts On Kawasaki Ninja 300 Sales Going Strong & Matches That Of TVS Apache RR 310

The TVS Apache RR 310's sales will recover in the month of June, but what is surprising is the Ninja 300's sales. Kawasaki didn't really update the mechanicals of the motorcycle but only launched new colours for the supersport. Despite this, the Ninja 300 continues to sell well and that just goes to show what a brilliant motorcycle it is.
